Retro rules at this 70s-inspired beach bungalow, 5 minutes from stunning Saunton Sands (sleeps 4)
It’s not often you pack knee-high boots for an English beachside holiday, but at this groovy bungalow, medallions and sheepskin waistcoats rule. A fabulous throwback to the 70s, everything in this 2-bedroom home is authentic to the period but in perfect condition: huge orange leather daybeds, vintage sideboards,flower-power cushions, cork-effect wallpaper, even a drinks trolley with Campari (though sadly, no cocktail umbrellas).
But it’s not just the décor that’s far out: if the weather turns you can watch 70s box sets (The Good Life, Starsky & Hutch) or play old-school Monopoly. Hopefully it won’t, though, as the location is sublime, overlooking the Braunton Burrows dunes and a 5-minute drive from golden Saunton Sands; a little further to Croyde. You can walk to restaurants and pubs in the evening – or throw yourselves a 70s dinner party! There are cookbooks to inspire you, and a dressing-up box full of flares, psychedelic shirts and miniskirts. Black Forest gateau, anyone?
Getting there: you’ll need to drive.
- You’re a 5-minute drive from beautiful Saunton Sands; one of the best beaches in Devon, with miles of golden sand and great surf. Croyde, Putsborough Sands and Woolacombe Beach are slightly further and busier; all have boards for hire and lessons available.
- Braunton Burrows is glorious for a stroll, a Biospehere Reserve where you might spy ringed plover and curlew. Or hire a bike and cycle along the Tarka Trail to pretty Barnstaple (6 miles).
- The Riverside Café in Braunton is brilliant for breakfasts, while Squires is hands-down the best fish and chip shop in the area (perhaps even North Devon!), award-winning and recommended by Rick Stein.
