Blissfully secluded design house for 10 with masses of outdoor space and huge views; walk to Mawgan Porth's golden beach or zip to Newquay & Watergate Bay
Space & setting.
*Brand new*
Skimming the treetops above a deep Cornish glade, this secluded modern house – with crisp lines, locally-quarried stone, and windows peeping out onto the woodland canopy – is the perfect place to gather a group for a memorable escape. Once the site of a hay barn, the build takes its aesthetic cues from an Italian Alpine farmhouse, using earthy tones and reclaimed materials to ground it in its natural landscape (the owners — a development and design duo — have had their work featured on Grand Designs, so their vision is incredible). There’s room for up to 10 people, but with 3 acres of orchard and valley to explore, 2 living rooms, and swings and nooks aplenty, you might have to ring a bell for dinner. Children will sleep soundly after days by the sea, cycling the Camel Trail and stream dipping on-site, while adults will enjoy birdsong-bathed morning cups of coffee on the patio, or indulgent soaks in the tub-with-a-view down the valley.
Walk down a bridleway to the golden beach at Mawgan Porth, where Mermaid Pools form at low tide, and gentle, rolling waves are perfect for learning to surf (experts can zip over to Newquay or Watergate Bay instead). Later, linger to watch one of the beach’s signature sunsets, then head back to the house for a candlelit Cornish feast inside or out, depending on the season, and the sound of silence.
Getting here: drive, or train to Newquay/Bodmin Parkway then taxi (15/25 mins), or fly to Newquay then taxi (5 mins)

Surrounds.
- Start the day with a yoga flow by the duck pond or round it off with a hot yin class at a local studio.
- Wander down to Mawgan Porth beach for breakfast at The Wild Cafe and lazy days on the golden sands (dog friendly). Swim in the magical Mermaid Pools at low tide and take the kids rock pooling.
- Learn to surf locally — King Surf in Mawgan Porth offers lessons, and can arrange coasteering too. Or drive over to Newquay / Watergate Bay for more challenging waves (5/15 mins).
- Hunt for cowrie shells at Boobey’s Bay, and slide down the seaweed-covered rocks.
- Walk a stretch of the South West Coastal Path (join it from Mawgan Porth); our favourite sections in this area are Trevose Head, Bedruthan Steps and Park Head.
- Kids will love holstering up for a water-pistol battle at the Giant Slip and Slide, a short way inland (summer only), or visiting Newquay Zoo and Blue Reef Aquarium.
- Hire bikes to freewheel along the Camel Trail towards Bodmin (often quieter and more sheltered). Or visit local vineyard Trevibban Mill for a guided tour and wine tasting.
- Head to Padstow for Rick Stein’s empire or take the boat across the estuary to dine at Rock’s Four Buoys restaurant.
- Visit the tranquil and contemplative Japanese Garden in St Mawgan, with its year-round display of trees, pathways and ponds.
- For an adult wellness hit there are various pop-up saunas year-round; follow up a yoga class at Ananta Studio with a cold plunge and sauna at Saunassa Nordic Spa in Newquay, or warm up with views of Fistral Beach or Newquay Harbour at Olla Hiki Sauna. The owners love the Zen Den‘s yoga yurt and Watergate Bay Hotel spa.
