You’ll love living like a local at this peaceful retreat in Kendal, a quirky little town cradled in the fells of the southern Lake District. In the heart of the creative quarter, buzzy Highgate brims with breweries and delis, antique shops and galleries, and a maze of intriguing cobbled courtyards. Spanning the top floor of a handsome Georgian townhouse, this light-filled apartment has been painstakingly restored to its former glory using local craftspeople. With 2 bedrooms and bathrooms, it’s now a sophisticated, sociable space for 1 or 2 couples or a family, with elegant interiors, bespoke furnishings, and sink-into window seats that gaze over the tangle of Kendal’s rooftops and the undulating hills beyond.

It would be tempting to while away your days moseying around the independent boutiques, cool cafes and artisan bakeries — you’re perfectly placed for it all — but this town is the gateway to the Lakes and hike you must. Pack a slab of famous Mint Cake then head out to the heather-cloaked moorlands, or zip over to Windermere, Grasmere, Keswick and Coniston by bike, bus or car. Return to soak weary limbs in the huge tub then head downstairs to sample local flavours at one of the brilliant restaurants on the street below.

Getting here: drive, or train to Oxenholme (3 hrs from London) then taxi (5 mins)

“After both growing up in The Lakes, we bought the apartment when we relocated back here from London 10 years ago. At the time we had no idea about the vibrant food scene and award-winning local producers which gave our then-local, Borough Market, a run for its money (at half the price!). Less touristy than other places in the Lakes – we were quickly spoilt for choice with local breweries, pop up restaurants, live music and art exhibitions all within walking distance. The apartment is in Kendal’s grandest Georgian townhouse which had been left unloved for years. After buying it off-plan (it had no roof at the time!) we painstakingly renovated it using local craftspeople to create our hidden sanctuary.” Owner, Chris
