Space & setting.

There’s a reason why Frome regularly tops ‘Best Places to Live’ lists. The tiny market town is utterly captivating, with its gorgeous period architecture, buzzy creative energy, and winding streets lined with speakeasy-style bars. Think East London vibes but surrounded by glorious Somerset countryside. Almost every shop is an independent, from the vintage stores lining the wonky cobbles of Catherine Hill, to the artisan bakeries, galleries, jewellers and a sweet little haberdashery proffering sewing classes.

This beautiful coach house is just as characterful: a spacious 2-bed affair, cleverly designed to complement its Georgian neighbours, but with every modern comfort, including underfloor heating, and beautiful arched doors that open onto a slice of garden. The palette is pale and tonal, with accents of sage and rose pink, and glossy herringbone floors give it a polished elegance. We especially love the vintage dressing table, and exquisite artworks throughout.  The location couldn’t be better: just 5 minutes’ stroll to vintage shops and foodie cafes, or in the other direction for riverside walks and village pubs with local cider on tap. And you can easily whiz to Longleat, Longleat spa, and buzzy Bruton for day trips.

Getting here: drive, or train to Frome direct from London and walk (5 mins)

“We’ve lived in Frome for 10 years, and I built the coach house to complement our Georgian house. Although it’s on the other side of our wall, it is very private and rests entirely in its own plot, with a walled garden. I worked for the artist Christo for many years and set up an art award for young people in his name, in the Middle East, which I still direct. I now collect young British and Irish artists and many of the works are hung in the coach house.” Owner, Emily

“The downstairs is dominated by 2 huge floor-to-ceiling arched windows, and in the morning, you have a view of garden and trees beyond, as the sun comes streaming in.”

We love
The herringbone floors and those gorgeous arched windows.

  • Browse the independents and artisan shops lining Catherine’s Hill: Pilea plant store is a goldmine.
  • There are foodie places down every nook and alley: Rye Bakery is a converted church, with a space for kids to play and awesome food. Another family-friendly option is Little Walcot, sister to the successful Bath bar and restaurant Walcot House. Our favourite adult options are the intimate Bistro Lotte and the High Pavement, for Moorish tapas and a twinkly terrace garden.
  • The Frome Independent Market takes over the town on the first Sunday of every month, lining the cobbled streets with food stalls, antiques, pottery, crafts, collectibles, artworks and live music.
  • Amble along the river to the lovely Talbot Inn in Mells (great food). Or walk or run the Imber Range path, a 30-mile loop trail beneath the huge skies of Salisbury Plain.
  • In summer, there’s wild swimming in the river at Farleigh Hungerford, and classical concerts and evening picnics at Iford Manor, just outside Frome.
  • Day trip to Longleat Safari Park (15 mins’ drive), the magical lakes and grottoes of Stourhead, and The Newt hotel, with its showstopping gardens and orchards and seasonally driven Garden Cafe.
