Space & setting.

For a country retreat far from the hustle and bustle of city life, this peaceful cottage is pretty perfect. A Victorian farmhouse renovated by a former Soho House architect, it sleeps 8 in 4 handsome bedrooms, with plenty of space to enjoy together and apart. After walking your dogs across the quiet Howgill Fells beyond the garden wall, gather around the woodburner to chat and play Scrabble, bask in the sunny garden or pop to the pub for a local ale. Should you need your batteries recharging you can slink off to a cushioned window seat with a book or go for long soaks in the roll-top tub instead.

There’s loads to uncover in the countryside nearby – head out on on foot, 2 wheels or 4 hoofs and discover the impressive Smardale Ghyll Viaduct, invigorating wild-swimming spots, and the mighty Coast-to-Coast footpath. Though the cottage is deliciously secluded, Kirkby Stephen is just a few miles down the road for frothy coffees and food supplies. A wonderful launchpad for the Dales, Lakes and North Pennines.

Owners of Cumbrian Hideaway

“We moved to Howgill Estate (next door) from London in 2016, and renovated the property over several years, filling it with eclectic pieces of furniture and artwork that we love. We took over this house in 2020 and fully renovated that too, with the help of Soho House interiors architect Georgina Rose. We opened it as a self-catering property in 2020 and it did so well that we decided to follow suit with the Estate and turn that into a luxe rental too.” Owners Peter and Amanda

We love
The big views from the front of the property, overlooking fields, hills and fells.

Walk to Ravenstonedale (1.8 miles) which will lead you to two of our great local pubs; the Black Swan and Kings Head.

Its superb dark skies are one of the things that make the Yorkshire Dales National Park so special. With large areas completely free from local light pollution, it’s a fantastic place to start your stargazing adventure. We have binoculars, warm blankets and Thermos flask for your hot chocolate you can rent to make a night of it.

There are a number of nearby wild swimming spots we can recommend.

A great route is to cycle from Brownber to Hawes over the Butter Tubs and then up to Tan Hill; the highest pub in England. We are just off the Lakes and Dales cycling route.

Our nearest stations are Oxenholme (journey to Brownber approx. 25 minutes by taxi, approx. £45 one way) and Kirkby Stephen (10 minutes by taxi to Brownber, but taxis from here will need to be booked in advance!)

We have a 7Kw charger available at Brownber. Just ask when you arrive and we can show you where it is!

On arrival you will find a welcome hamper containing tasty treats. We also leave all the essentials including milk, butter, salt, pepper, olive oil, some tea bags, coffee and sugar in the kitchen.
