Space & setting.

A short drive from Prussia Cove and Praa Sands lies a pretty old farm, enshrouded in peace. It’s home to 3 beautifully renovated 18thC cottages: one small, one medium, one big, and all paired with the most gorgeous rustic modern interiors. Ancient granite and slate walls are offset by whitewashed floorboards, sheepskins, parlour palms in concrete planters and mid-century furniture (including that Ercol love seat). Hole up in the littlest for a romantic stay; book the larger ones for family and friend holidays; or take over the whole site, sleeping 12 in total.

Sun-splashed courtyard gardens look almost Mediterranean, with teak sunloungers perfectly placed for the late-afternoon rays. And if you’re worried about cabin fever, don’t be: the old farmland has been replaced by subtropical gardens, so there’s loads of room for kids to run about, plus a boules pitch to add to the holiday feels. Spend your days walking the South West Coastal Path, paddle boarding on the Atlantic and visiting Cornwall’s prettiest beaches and seaside towns, then stock up on fabulous local produce at the nearby farm shop and conjure up a feast to eat in the gardens.

Getting here: you’ll want to drive, so you have a car to explore
Owners of Palm Cottages

Owners Chris and Christen moved here in 2013 after spending several years living in Bermuda and Australia. He spends several months of the year captaining tall shops (he’s supposed to be retired but can’t resist); she was once a journalist and now teaches Pilates and fitness, both of which are on offer if you fancy a private class in the on-site studio.

My Kip favourites

They love
“The peace and quiet; the noisiest things here are the birds. In the warmer weather, we like to eat outside so we can hear them sing.”

We love
The beautiful wooden bedhead in Cottage 2, handcrafted from old planks, with little copper cone lights for reading.

  • You’re 5 minutes’ drive from Prussia Cove, a beautifully secluded sandy cove fringed by rocks.
  • Or head for Praa Sands or Perranuthnoe, both long wide sandy stretches that are perfect for young families. There are beach games and body boards to borrow at the cottage. On the way home, stop at the farm shop in Perranuthnoe and pick up ingredients for a BBQ supper.
  • Older kids might prefer Long Rock Beach, an excellent spot for water sports including windsurfing, kitesurfing and paddle boarding.
  • The owners recommend a spectacular coastal walk between Zennor and Gurnard’s Head, wild and unspoilt, overlooking rugged granite cliffs and the deep-blue Atlantic. Reward yourself with lunch at The Gurnard’s Head pub when you get there.
  • Day trip to Penzance (historic architecture and great little boutiques, plus an Art-Deco lido if you’re not a fan of sea swimming); Mousehole (an idyllic little harbour village) or St Ives (a creative hub, home to an offshoot of the Tate Gallery, the Barbara Hepworth Sculpture Gardens and the brilliant Leach pottery).

There is a Co-Op in Rosudgeon and a village store in Goldsithney – both about 1.5 miles away.

There are pubs at Rosdugeon and in Goldsithney about 1.5 miles away although if you’re looking for good food we recommend travelling further afield.

Middle Colenso is 6 miles from the train station and in a rural location so we don’t recommend coming by train.

It’s not possible to use the studio unsupervised for insurance reasons but you can book in for a Pilates or personal training session after you’ve booked a stay.

There’s a coffee machine in The Old Granary, while Smugglers Lane and Carter’s Croft have cafetières.

Four nights during high season and 3 nights off peak. However, there are no set check-in days so if there is a shorter gap it might be possible to book.
