Frank and his brother & cousins, grew up camping in the woodlands and valleys in and around this 300-acre estate, and he wanted to recreate and elevate this experience for others. “Our site offers the restorative rituals of camping, but done in real style and comfort. We all innately crave these special moments amongst nature, and nowhere are they felt more powerfully than by the Firesyde.”
He loves
“There’s a special moment, when the sun has set, the fire is lit and the world has gone quiet for the evening; all you can hear is the faint sound of a bird in the distance and the crackle of the fire. A vast silence sweeps the valleys. You sit with loved ones until the early hours, lost in conversation and the warm embrace of nature.”
We love
The gorgeous stone bathtubs, and unique fireplace design.
You may not love
Pets only allowed midweek. Patchy phone reception but high-speed WiFi. You’re not secluded, as there are 5 lodges plus a row of cottages nearby, but everything is staggered for privacy.
Sustainability.
“Each lodge is oriented for optimal natural light and passive heating, reducing the need for artificial energy. High-performance glazing and insulation ensure year-round comfort while minimising heat loss. Additionally, appliances are energy-efficient. Taken together these properties ensure a low environmental footprint.”
Surrounds.
- Frank’s dad has cultivated the most incredible wild garden in the woodlands, all vast plants and wild gladioli where you’re welcome to picnic amongst.
- Stroll up to the Hilltop Kitchen to feast on the views, towering cakes, and fabulous farm-to-fork dishes. It’s seasonal, so check ahead, but if the café is closed, you might be lucky enough to coincide with a pop-up supper.
- Lose yourself in 100 acres of magical woodland and moss banks at the neighbouring Winkworth Arboretum.
- Lace up your boots and stride out along a section of the pretty Greensand Way, a 57-mile route named for the green-coloured sandstone rock that it passes.
- Enjoy a gastro meal at The Merrry Harriers; a bracing 55-min walk away if you want to sample the wine list, or 10 minutes in the car.
- Treat yourself to an in-cabin massage treatment for maximum zen.
- Use the foraging guide to find chestnuts, wild garlic and juniper berries to add to your evening campfire meal.
