Drumtennant Farm Cottage

It’s properly quiet up here – no passing traffic, just hundreds of sheep and the occasional sweep of an osprey overhead. Views stretch and stretch for miles; there’s even a loch. And yet it’s just 10 mins’ drive down to Dunkeld (Gateway to the Highlands) for a flat white, a pub garden and a browse around town. Talk about the best of both worlds. The cottage sleeps 7 across 3 bedrooms and was rebuilt by its owners as their own home first, so it feels personal and thoughtful rather than showy. Think underfloor heating and board games for cosy evenings, and an open-plan kitchen so you can cook while joining in the chat. Outside, a south-facing garden where children and dogs can tear about safely while you sit with a coffee and a good read.

 Walk straight out into heather-clad hills. Swim in the loch if you’re feeling brave. Mountain bike from the front door – or hire them in Dunkeld to explore peaceful roads and forest. Day trip to the Cairngorms, bag a munro. It’s ideal for both relaxed and gently adventurous holidays, and you can even get here by the Caledonian Sleeper from London, taxi-ing the last stretch up the hill. It’s comfortable. It’s a taste of wild without fully committing. And did we mention the views?
