Perched quietly on the Sleat peninsula — Skye’s softer, greener half, where silver seas meets the Cuillin mountains — this is the vision of Laura and Neil, an architect couple. Inspired by the traditional airidh – a humble herdsman’s hut – their contemporary cabin feels rooted and right, its rough, protective exterior sheltering a warm, timber-lined heart. The minimal architecture frames the view rather than competing with it: slide open the great picture window and the sound of the tide quickly fills the space. Inside, every detail has been chosen with care – sculptural furniture, hand-thrown ceramics, muted linens – to fulfil a design-magazine vision of calm and comfort where you can cook, read, and simply switch off and watch the elements.

Step outside and Skye unfurls around you. Swim in the brisk sea, cycle the Ord loop, spy otters and seals along the shore. Feast on local mussels, visit Dunscaith Castle or the Torabhaig Distillery, kayak around the peninsula, and take a boat to Canna to spot puffins and dolphins. As evening draws in, light the firepit or woodburner, pour a dram, and watch the Cuillin ridge blush gold in the fading light – a moment of stunning beauty in a place that feels both remote but welcoming.

“Neil and I were both born in Glasgow, studied architecture at the Mackintosh School, and later moved to Skye, where Neil used to spend his childhood summers, helping his grandmother run a B&B. We’ve since built our own home here and raised our 3 children, along with various animals. We are privileged to live in this beautiful and quiet area of Skye – a secret gem missed by most who visit the island – and wanted to share that with others, so they could enjoy the closeness to nature, the drama of the coastline and vagaries of the seasons. We also wanted an opportunity to use our architecture skills for our own cabin project. We’ve designed many others for clients through our practice Dualchas Architects, but to do one ourselves, and put our heart and soul into it, was an opportunity we could not resist.” Owners, Laura and Neil

My Kip favourites

They love
“The beautiful warmth of the timber-lined interiors and sliding the front window open to hear the sound of the shore.”

We love
The sketching materials. Even if (like us), you’re not artistic, what a place to just lose yourself in drawing what you see.

You may not love
Min 3 nights. Remote; you’ll need a car to get here and reach pubs, restaurants & shops, and access is via a sometimes steep, single-track road. The owners live next door but you’re completely private. The weather can be fierce on occasion! Sorry, no children or pets.

  • “We had such an incredible stay at Glasan on the Sleat Peninsula. The accommodation is special; it’s been meticulously designed by Laura and Neil with exceptional detail - they have thought of everything! The layout means that wherever you are inside - lying in bed or making dinner - you are treated with the most incredible view of the beach and sea just metres from the door, with Skye’s Cuillin mountain range towering over in the background. If you are into the outdoors then there’s plenty to keep you occupied, with walks, swimming spots and lots of wildlife to see, from Sea Eagles to Otters along with plenty of deer. Having said that, Glasan would also be perfect for those looking to escape and relax for a bit too - we visited in early January and so the accommodation was the perfect snug to return back to after being battered by the winter weather during the day. We are really grateful to Laura and Neil for welcoming us and being so helpful. They have done an incredible job in designing such an amazing place which felt very special.“

  • "We had a lovely stay in Glasan in a perfect quiet situation overlooking the beach and Cuillens in the distance. Neil and Laura were very helpful hosts and provided plenty of infomation about the local area. It is a very well equiped kitchen and the whole cabin is very clean and tidy and finished to a high standard. Very comfortable and cosy."

  • "We had the most magical stay at Glasan. Neil and Laura were the perfect hosts. The attention to detail they put into this beautiful cabin was second to none and waking up to the gorgeous view from the main room each morning was truly very special. It was a trip we will never forget. We will definitely be returning to Glasan."

  • "A truly unique location, house, and attention to detail. The scenery is breathtaking and the house is conceived as to magnify it. The house appliances and materials are first class. A very impressive realization."

Surrounds.

  • Swim out from the shore, in clear, cold waters that wake every sense — then wrap up warm and drink coffee as you watch the ever-changing light dance along the Cuillin ridge.
  • Bring bikes and cycle the Ord loop road, a glorious coastal circuit with sea views and the joy of being somewhere so remote.
  • Feast on local mussels, harvested by your neighbour – the freshest taste of the island, best enjoyed with a glass of white and salty hair.
  • Kayak the Sleat coastline with South Skye Sea Kayaks. You’ll glide past hidden coves and sea cliffs where seals laze in the sun.
  • Walk the forest path at Kinloch, then fine dine in the hotel restaurant – local produce, island pace, candlelight and calm.
  • Explore the ruins of Dunscaith Castle perched above the sea, its weathered stones steeped in legend and Atlantic wind.
  • Take a boat trip around Canna and spot puffins, dolphins, Minke whales and orcas. There’s a possibility you’ll see humpback whales over the summer months, too.

FAQs.

Ish! It’s 20 mins’ drive away; Bar Am Pràban, part of the Eilean Iarmain Hotel in Camuscross. The food is good (local seafood, venison etc) and the bar is traditional – timber lined with an open fire and cosy atmosphere. There is often live music on at the weekend.
