Overlooking one of the world’s most beautiful beaches – Uig Sands – this is where wild Hebridean beauty meets laid-back luxe. Designed by award-winning architects GRAS, it’s all about connecting with the elements then relaxing in deep comfort. Huge windows frame ever-changing skies and you’ll spot golden eagles from the sofa. Bedrooms (4 kingsize, 1 single/twin) are dreamy havens with cloud-soft linens; in the master, you can even watch the stars from bed through a bespoke glass ceiling panel, before pressing a button to close the curtain, so cool. And yes, there’s an outdoor bathtub to watch the sun set and stars come out — best paired with a local Isle of Lewis gin and tonic.

Created by Sam and Jen – London-based but with deep Lewis roots – impressively, they’ve made it both gorgeous and sustainable, with triple glazing and an air source heat pump. Two open-plan living spaces mean plenty of room to cook, eat, and chatter together (plus several quiet corners), while the surrounding landscape provides ultimate adventure. Swim in icy rivers, surf turquoise waves, cycle the moors, and unwind in a wood-fired beach sauna. Later, wander down to the local restaurant for just-caught seafood and island lamb or just a drink: views are stupendous.

This is for anyone who dreams of remote adventures with their favourite people, breathtaking natural  beauty, and deep home-from-home comfort. The only low is also the high: the location. This is the most far north-westerly point in the British Isles (next stop, Greenland) so it takes an effort to visit. However, it is a spectacular place, unlike anywhere else in the world.

Getting here: best to drive; ferry to Stornoway from Ullapool then drive to Uig (4 hours’ total). See FAQ for other options.

“We are Sam and Jen. We (and our 2 kids plus a daft spaniel) live in London, however Jen’s mum is from Lewis and lives in Stornoway, and Sam previously lived here for 20 years, working as a photographer and film maker. When we had our children, we wanted them to have a stronger connection to the place and the people, and therefore the idea of building a home away from home was born. We wanted a place that would be the ultimate location to get our kids out on the hills and sea.”

My Kip favourites

They love
“Using the outdoor bathtub, year-round. Piping hot water with views over the beach and hills, it is quite a decadent experience.”

We love
The romantic kingsized cabin bed in the annexe, from which you can look out over Uig Sands via the enormous window.

You may not love
A 3, 4 or 7-night minimum stay (see Specifics). An additional charge for pets and a hefty security deposit (see FAQ).  Not suitable for toddlers. You’ll need a car to get here.

  • "From incredible views to the crashing waves of the sea, there truly isn’t a place anywhere in the world like this. It was such a beautiful and inspiring place to stay for a week and has helped us make memories that will last forever. Thank you for this beautiful stay."

Surrounds.

  • Hebrides House on Kip Hideaways
  • Hebrides House on Kip Hideaways
  • Hebrides House on Kip Hideaways
  • Hebrides House on Kip Hideaways
  • The house overlooks one of Conde Nast Traveller’s “best beaches in the world” – Uig Sands – plus there are smaller white-sandy bays across the island, all with dreamy turquoise water.
  • We’d advise a 5mm wetsuit (brrrr) but this is a place for both fresh water and sea swimming. You can walk down to the river that snakes around the edge of Uig Sands for a dip (coloured rusty red because of the peat up on the moors but perfectly clean), or plunge straight out into the waves. Valtos Beach is perfect for less-confident swimmers or kids because it is a sheltered bay (10 mins’ drive).
  • The Outer Hebrides has some of the best cold-water surf in the world. Hire boards and book lessons locally.
  • A local company has 2 mobile wood-fired saunas that pop up at local beaches. Booking is essential, but the ‘sauna followed by a dip in the sea’ experience is brilliant. And vice versa.
  • This is one of the most untouched natural areas of Western Europe, and is famous as a bird-watching destination: birds of prey, sea birds and waders are routinely spotted in Uig, and you’ll often see golden eagles through the living room windows. The house also gets visited a lot by wild deer, and there are local sites for spotting dolphins plus minke, humpback and killer whales (orcas).
  • Food and drink are a big part of Hebridean life. The local distillery is excellent (Isle of Lewis Gin), plus you’re within walking distance of Uig Sands Restaurantt, which specialises in just-caught seafood, venison and island lamb.
  • Gaelic & Norse history and culture is everywhere — the Lewis chessmen were discovered on Uig Sands. As well as the well-known attractions like the Callanish Standing Stones and the Broch, there are lesser-known sites including a Norse fort a short walk from the house, on the edge of Uig Sands. Uig Museum is in the village (Timsgearraidh), and details the long history back to Neolithic times.
  • There are many gifted artists living in the Outer Hebrides, some in Uig, and others further afield. Borgh Pottery, An Lanntair, Cliff Studios and The Mission House Studio all have lovely collections.
