Hen House
Hen House Studio
“On being left a small legacy by Nick’s father we decided to look for land where we could imagine an alternative life. After researching many plots, Nick found Fiscavaig. When we visited, we drove along Loch Harport and as we came over the hill in Fiscavaig the most amazing vista spread out before us – small islands stretching out to the Minch, it felt magical and ancient. The adventure had began. Having always lived in old properties we were excited by the idea of contemporary building. We had visited Corbusier’s small Cabenon in the south of France and were inspired by that. Rural Design, a fairly young-at-the-time architecture practice in Skye, helped us bring our vision to life. Both buildings have been featured in many architectural magazines and on TV, and the Hen House has won several architectural awards.” Owners Kate & Nick
The love
“The incredible setting: within a ribbon hamlet the houses feel totally secluded, with magnificent sea views, yet we’re just 6 miles from Carbost.”
We love
The Nordic and iconic 50s influences: Jacobsen chairs, carefully chosen artworks, sofas by Robin Day and the use of plywood for the stairs and fixtures.

Sustainability.
Eco builds with high insulation values, local sustainable building materials and impressive energy efficiency. Toilets are waterless.
Surrounds.
- Explore the Minguinish Peninsula: walk through birch and hazel woods, along burns and sea cliffs, or down to quiet beaches of dark volcanic sand streaked with white shell fragments. Early risers might spot otters; dusk brings roe deer, owls and beautiful shifting light.
- A short drive delivers you to stunning Talisker Bay, with its big skies and Atlantic breezes.
- Warm up after with excellent local coffee and something baked at Caora Dhubh, or try Café Cùil for lunch – both near Carbost.
- Whether you’re here to hike, scramble or simply gawp, Glenbrittle and Sligachan put you right at the foot of the Cuillin. Even the ‘easy’ walks feel epic; the views do most of the work.
- The fish van visits the croft on Wednesday afternoons! Buy local lobster and prawns or order hand-dived scallops in advance.
- Hop on the CalMac ferry from Sconser for a gentle island adventure on Rasaay. Lunch and hire bikes at Raasay House with views back to Skye, enjoy a wander or cycle (and perhaps a distillery stop), then putter back to Skye again.
- Nick recommends Dun Ardtreck and the Viking canal at Rubha an Dùnain, where history feels folded into the landscape and you’re rarely sharing it with more than a few curious sheep.
- Sometimes the best plan is no plan at all: light the fire, watch the weather move across Loch Bracadale, read, nap, repeat.
