*Brand new*

High above Betws-y-Coed, where fields start to fold into the rugged peaks of Eryri National Park, Ascella sits quietly on a working farm. The kind of place you’ll find only if you mean to, this off-grid cabin is swallowed by big skies and bigger views, its windows framing the epic panoramas and snowy peaks of Snowdonia. It’s utterly private: just for you, perhaps your favourite person and/or dog, and the slow, wild rhythm of the hills. Inside, there’s a beautiful balance of simplicity and style: pale wood, black detailing, and that effortless Scandi calm. You’ll find everything you need and nothing you don’t: hand-crafted oak furniture, solar power, a kingsized bed positioned perfectly for stargazing, and a deep, alfresco bath, the best seat in the house. When night falls, light the log burner, pour something local and lovely, and let the soundtrack be the owls outside and the crackle of vinyl from the old cassette player.

By day, adventure is everywhere. Head into the National Park for stunning hikes, Swallow Falls waterfall, wild swims, white-water rafting, and scaling Yr Wyddfa — or whiz through the valleys on Europe’s fastest zip-line if you’re that way inclined. For something gentler, chug through the scenery on a Victorian steam train or wander into Betws-y-Coed for local galleries and a pint at the Ty Gwyn Inn. But the real magic is returning to Ascella afterwards, sitting and watching the light shift across the mountains, and realising that your world has shrunk to simply this cabin and complete, glorious stillness for a moment in time.

Getting here: getting here: drive (1 hr 20 from Liverpool, 1 hr 30 from Manchester, 3 hours from London), or train to Betws-y-Coed then taxi (25 mins)

Inside Tarporley Shacks, Cheshire

It all started a few years ago. Harry and George had always had a keen interest in building and constructing things — initially, it was treehouses, speakers and furniture, then they built their first cabin on Harry’s family farm. For a small structure, it was a little more complex than you might think. With composting loos, solar power, kitchen, bathroom and bedroom all integrated into a small space, the process threw up all sorts of challenges. Though it was stressful, they were delighted to create such a unique holiday experience with such a low carbon impact, and went on to create more. Their aim is to unlock amazing places for holiday makers all over the UK.
