Scandi-style minimalism has long reigned supreme in wellness spaces, but serotonin-boosting colour and fun, vibrant interiors can be more uplifting and energising than a second espresso or the first sunlight of summer. Inspired by her time spent in Oaxaca, the owner’s cottage is seasoned with Mexico’s many vibrant flavours from artisanal homewares to pops of bold, brilliant paint, and its effect is one of joy and serenity. As a designer and wellness entrepreneur, she’s committed to making spaces as restorative as possible, even replacing the traditional guestbook with a journal for visitors to share the thoughts and feelings they experience here. And as a champion of morning rituals, coffee is a top priority: there are 3 different ways to make yours, locally-made ceramics to serve it in and you’ll even find your preferred milk in the fridge (alongside bread, homemade scones and jam).

Shelves are lined with World of Interiors editions, art books and design tomes, whilst framed illustrations bought in Rome and photography depicting scenes from the south of France reflect the fact that the place is more than just a home, it’s a sanctuary. Located on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales, just 3 minutes’ walk from the market town of Richmond, it offers the perfect balance of solitude and community. Stroll into town for a sausage roll stuffed with caramelised onions at Wilfred’s Deli then get set to explore one of the country’s most beautiful National Parks.

Getting here: drive, or train to Darlington or Northallerton, then taxi (20-30 mins)

“I grew up here in Middleton Tyas, and after living in London and then Mexico, I was pulled back to Yorkshire at the outbreak of the pandemic to care for my sister, who had just been diagnosed with cancer, and to help look after her newborn baby. It was the hardest time for our family, so I decided to find myself a base here to be nearby. This house was an outlet for me during that difficult time, and I poured my energy into the renovations, which I did mostly by myself. I wanted to generate the feeling of full life and colour, as I watched the fragility of life before me — and enhance my own wellbeing through creativity. I have since been living between here and Mexico, renting the house while I’m away.” Owner, Catriona

We love
The vibrant artwork from the owner’s world travels.

No private garden, though there is a shared outdoor space to hang washing etc. Sorry, no pets or children, except babes-in-arms.

  • "I very much enjoyed my stay at this colourful and relaxing cottage. The house is small but perfectly formed and is full of character with interesting art, books and stimulating reading material. It is one of those homes that has a very happy yet restful ambience filled with natural light. The charming market town of Richmond is just a few minutes walk away with its wonderful range of culture and history and the cottage is also well placed for exploring the Yorkshire Dales, and the North Yorkshire coast. I came away from my week's stay feeling both refreshed and inspired by the lovely and quirky little home and wish I could have stayed much longer."
