Lakeside Hut at the Lodge

The very best places to stay in

Essex

Forget everything you think you know about Essex. This is a county that constantly surprises — a place of salt marshes and wild skies, of sleepy estuaries where the tide creeps in like a secret. Here, colourful beach huts sit shoulder to shoulder along windswept shores, Georgian villages hide cosy pubs behind ivy-covered walls, and the air always smells faintly of sea and adventure. It’s England’s sunniest county, too, which somehow feels exactly right: Essex has that open-hearted, golden feel about it.

Head inland and you’ll find gentle farmland rolling toward ancient woodland and elegant market towns like Saffron Walden and Coggeshall, where half-timbered houses lean as if sharing gossip. There’s history here too — Roman ruins in Colchester, medieval towers, and sprawling estates where deer wander at dawn. And yet, Essex never feels old. There’s a spark of modern creativity threaded through it all: quirky cafés in converted barns, artists’ studios tucked into fishing villages, and a thriving food scene that champions local makers and bold flavours. See our top Kip tips for the region, below.

It’s close enough to London for spontaneous escapes, yet worlds away in pace and mood. Whether you come for the coast, the countryside, or just to feel the sun on your face, we love this corner of East Anglia for being everything other than the cliches. Find unique places to stay in Essex right here: lakeside lodges with outdoor baths and design-led homes that will make you swoon.

FOODIE TREAT.

Cross the tidal causeway from Colchester to Mersea Island for a plate of oysters so fresh they’ll taste of the tide itself. Wash them down with a local white wine and a view of the shimmering estuary.

MUST VISIT.

Frinton-on-Sea beach. Unspoilt and genteel, with a promenade lined in candy-coloured beach huts and sea so so clear it catches the light like glass. Bring a thermos of tea, a book, and no sense of hurry.

WITH KIDS.

RSPB Wallasea Island is great for families: a rewilded reserve of coastline, saltmarsh, mudflats and lagoons. Bring binoculars and watch for short-eared owls, diving terns, hundreds of waders, and seals hauling themselves out of the water. At golden hour skylarks spiral high and the marshes blush pink in the evening light.

SECRET KIP TIP.

Go wild swimming at Paper Mill Lock. Hidden among willows on the River Chelmer, this peaceful stretch of water is perfect for a summer dip. Bring a towel and picnic.

ARCHITECTURE.

Climb Layer Marney Tower — England’s tallest Tudor gatehouse with sweeping views over the Blackwater Estuary. Rising dramatically from the flat Essex countryside, it’s a masterpiece of red brick and Renaissance flourish framed by rolling parkland and neatly clipped gardens. It’s history, artistry, and quiet grandeur all at once — Essex elegance at its most understated.

BEST ACTIVITY.

Stroll through Dedham Vale: the landscapes that inspired John Constable’s paintings. Wide skies, lazy rivers, and hay meadows humming with wildlife.
