The very best places to stay in

Lincolnshire

Lincolnshire is England’s quiet giant, with vast skies and the North Sea curling along its eastern edge. The rhythm here is gentle, the landscapes beguiling. On the coast, classic beaches (Skegness, Cleethorpes) rub shoulders with the unspoilt Anderby Creek and the wonderfully named Saltfleetby-Theddlethorpe — a wild nature reserve of saltmarshes and sand dunes.

Inland, the Lincolnshire Wolds ripple with green grace, a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty where hares dart through barley fields and villages look unchanged since the postman came by horse. Down in the south, Rutland Water glitters on the horizon—a vast mirror of sky where you can sail, paddleboart, birdwatch, cycle, or simply walk your dog along its fringes.

Lincoln itself balances medieval majesty with modern sparkle: cobbled streets tumble from its hilltop cathedral to the waterfront, where cafés and galleries buzz beside the Brayford Pool. Trace history’s footsteps at Lincoln Castle, where one of the precious original copies of the Magna Carta rests behind heavy oak doors. Down in the south, Stamford’s fine Georgian façades make even a simple stroll feel like stepping into a film set.

MUST VISIT.

Stamford is the UK’s first town to be designated as a conservation area. Ergo, it’s beautifully preserved, and full of indie boutiques and restaurants (try Hoppi Dorri for soul food and sushi). Book a historical tour, or a treasure hunt trail, depending on your companions. Market day is Friday.

ARCHITECTURE.

Lincoln Cathedral is aa medieval masterpiece that still steals the skyline. Climb the tower for views that stretch forever.

History buffs will also rejoice in Lincoln Castle. Wander the ancient walls and see one of the only surviving original Magna Carta manuscripts.

WITH KIDS.

Spend a day at Cleethorpes, a lovely seaside town on the Humber estuary. Think 4 miles of sand, candy coloured beach huts, vintage arcade games and a miniature steam railway. Best enjoyed with fish and chips wrapped in nostalgia.

BEST ACTIVITY.

The Lincolnshire Wolds Way is a walker’s paradise. You’ll hike through rolling hills and sleepy hamlets below big, cinematic skies. Bring binoculars: thanks to the varied landscapes, there are masses of birds to spot, from sand martins and bittern to peregrines and flycatchers, plus winter starling murmurations.

My Kip favourites

FOODIE TREAT.

The food at The Brownlow Arms in Hough-on-the-Hill is exceptional, rivalling the city restaurants but without the fuss. Don’t miss the twice-baked Lincolnshire poacher cheese souffle with creamed leeks.

SECRET KIP TIP.

Kinema in the Woods is an enchanting timewarp cinema in Woodhall Spa, where the organ still rises between reels to play live tunes.
