The very best places to stay in

Shropshire

There’s something about Shropshire that feels timeless. Straddling the West Midlands and the Welsh border, this county is a world away from the noise and crowds of more familiar destinations. Here, life moves at a gentler pace. Medieval market towns quietly spill into sleepy villages and the landscape is a patchwork of green hills, winding rivers and ancient woodlands. Whether you’re initially drawn by foodie Ludlow, Shrewsbury’s 16thC Black and White buildings or the Shropshire Hills (an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty), once you’ve experienced it you’ll want to return again and again. Shropshire coaxes you to slow down and enjoy feeling calm.

Shrewsbury: a town that could’ve been made for wandering. With its medieval streets, half-timbered black and white houses and 11thC Norman Abbey there’s beauty around every corner.

Best activity

Walking in the Shropshire Hills. This AONB is a balm to the soul for those who love wide-open spaces and peace. Miles upon miles of gentle hills, quiet valleys, and distant views; the perfect antidote to everyday life.

With kids

Ironbridge Gorge: a Unesco site, Ironbridge is where the Industrial Revolution began. The gorge, with its iconic iron bridge and surrounding museums, tells the most fascinating tale.

Foodie treat

Ludlow’s historic castle sits above the town, but it’s the food scene here that really stands out. From its farmers’ markets to its Michelin-starred restaurants, Ludlow is a town that knows good food.

Must visit

In late summer, the rugged Long Mynd heath is cloaked in purple heather, as far as the eye can see. Bilberry grows here too, which attract unusual insects and birdlife. Keep an eye out for a green hairstreak butterfly or stonechat amongst the gorse.

We love the ivy-clad ruins of Clun Castle. Come for the day and bring a picnic to eat beside the peaceful River Clun.
