You won’t spot Tigín from the road — it’s a 300m walk in, through long grass and birdsong, past orchard trees and wild meadow. And that’s the point. Hidden in the very heart of 73 acres of woodland and rolling pasture, this tiny house was built to disappear into nature, not stand out from it. Inside, everything is simple and intentional. Natural cork walls, marmoleum floors and beech ply from floor to ceiling give a feeling of real warmth and calm. It was built by Common Knowledge, a social enterprise in the west of Ireland, and has been furnished with things the owners genuinely love — well-made pieces sourced from small brands and artists. A ladder leads up to the sleeping loft, and down below, the table calls for breakfasts with a book, late-night card games, and rainy afternoons with tea.

Outside, it’s even better. There’s a wood-fired sauna with a huge panoramic window overlooking the hills, and an outdoor copper bath for soaks under the stars. You’ll likely spot deer grazing in the early morning light, and hear owls as you sit around the firepit with a smoky glass of red. Basically, the walk to the cabin feels like crossing into another pace of life. Originally created as a personal retreat for the owners, they spend time here to properly switch off, and it’s easy to see how. There’s no rush, no noise, no pressure to do anything but be here.

Getting here: drive, or train to Rathdrum then taxi (10 mins)

Tigin on Kip Hideaways

We created this space as a retreat for our visits home from Paris, where we live. We’ve furnished it with materials and pieces we love, sourced from brands and suppliers we admire. It started as a space for our own holidays; we’re now delighted to share it with others too.” Owners Tim and Katie

My Kip favourites

They love
“Morning coffee out on the deck, watching the mist lift from the hills. Later, a sunset sauna then pizza and wine under the stars. It’s a place where we can properly switch off and just spend time together in nature.”

We love
The analogue touches: old-school cassettes and a tape player, and a film camera — you’re gifted an Instax roll so you can capture your memories.

You may not love
Adults only. A 300m walk to the cabin from the parking spot. The kingsize bed is on a mezzanine, accessed by ladder steps. You need to drive to pubs and shops (5 mins).

Sustainability.

This is a deeply eco-conscious project. Built with natural and sustainable materials (including cork insulation and beech ply), it runs entirely on solar power and uses nature-friendly cleaning products. In 2025, the owners planted 2,500 native trees as part of an ambitious rewilding project – and a portion of every booking supports this growing forest.

  • Glenmalure Lodge is a cosy local pub, with open fires and hearty food. Book a table in advance (5 mins’ drive, not walkable).

  • Tim also recommends Beyond the Trees; a 1.4km path built high in the trees with panoramic views (10 mins’ drive).
  • Roundwood Stores is a great place to pick up supplies for your stay — an artisan grocers, bakery and coffee shop (20 mins’ drive). The owners also run the foodie Coach House pub next door (reservations recommended).
  • Visit Avoca, a traditional handweavers’ village, where you can take guided tours of the mill and buy original woven goods (15 mins’ drive).
  • Brittas Bay beach is one of the most popular beaches in Wicklow, with 3.2km of powdery sand (25 mins’ drive).
