Space & setting.

Rattan baskets for beach days, abstract paintings, Haeckels toiletries, stacks of indie mags, Studio Herron wall hangings and smile-inducing pops of colour: it’s no surprise that the owners of this fabulous barn conversion come from fashion design backgrounds. One of 3 properties on a 7-acre smallholding in Bude, it’s the kind of place that impresses in-laws and infants in equal measure – better yet, take over all 3, and have a group holiday for 21.

The architecture is a welcome departure from Cornwall’s nautical cliches, with clerestory windows inspired by Norwich Cathedral. Bifold doors flood the open-plan kitchen with sunshine for joyful cooking, or stock up on BBQ bits and serve it fresh off the grill at the alfresco dining table. A private hot tub is perfectly positioned for the evening sun (post-prandial soaks are heaven), and there’s a huge shared lawn with football goals and den-building space for kids. Further afield, surf beaches, foodie restaurants and coastal walks with pub lunches await. Just be warned – a few days here and you’ll be designated official holiday house finder for years to come: friends will reminisce about that place you booked that time; family will pester you for its name every summer.

“Conrad and I moved here from London in 2007 with 2 small boys in tow. We had both worked in the fashion industry for years and craved a slower pace of life and fresh air. Our farmhouse came with 7 acres of land, and the gardens have evolved over the years with some (a lot) of help from our parents. Con’s dad, an architect, helped us plan both barns, which we renovated from empty brick shells. We’ve always been passionate about design, so loved filling them with modern art and textiles. Now we live off-site so guests can take over the whole smallholding, or 3 smaller private rentals.” Owner, Karen

  • "Our best-ever family holiday with our 2 and 4-year-old boys. This is a stunning, stylish place that also manages to be incredibly family friendly and relaxed. The surrounding terraces and light space were amazing, the layout & furniture just beautiful. Our boys never wanted to leave; they loved bouncing on the trampoline and exploring the beautiful beaches that the area has to offer. The owners are incredible hosts. We felt so welcomed."

  • Bude
  • Bude's sea pool
  • Bude beach

  • Bude is surf heaven. Hire kit and book lessons if you’re a beginner; the owners’ kids are both coaches at Big Blue Surf School. Or simply swim, paddle and float in Bude’s natural sea pool.
  • There’s also a brilliant restaurant in Boscastle called The Rocket Store. It’s great to go for a morning swim in the harbour then get brunch there.
  • Walk or run stretches of the South West Coastal Path, awash with stunning seascapes.
  • Trebarwith Strand is incredibly beautiful at low tide.
  • We love rockpooling at Northcott Mouth Beach, and admiring the rock formations at Crackington Haven. There’s a great pub at Crackington where you can sit on the wall and watch the sun go down.
  • Pretty Port Isaac and Padstow are easy day trips — you can cycle to the latter along the Camel Trail and reward yourself with fish and chips by Rick Stein for lunch.
  • Or visit lovely Clovelly, with its steep cobbled hills and famous donkeys, then have a long lunch at The Farmers Arms on the way back.
