Space & setting.

There’s something fairytale-esque about these Igluhuts — hand-crafted wooden pods, which look like they’ve sprung up, magic bean-like, from the Suffolk countryside. Inside, each is a beautiful blend of calm and cosy, with bright white walls, boho cushions atop vintage-style armchairs and a double bed tucked into a nook. Outside, you have your own terrace, complete with firepit and barbecue, where you can watch wildlife wander past by day and stargaze by night; night skies are incredible.

There’s a sense of magic to this whole retreat, actually; a 10-acre site with 2,000 trees and a sparkling lake. There are sauna huts hidden amongst trees, yoga classes run by the owners’ daughter and you can pick up home-style cooked meals from an honesty shop on site. If exploring is on the agenda, just pull on your walking boots or jump in the car and you’ll find coastal walls, historical sites and incredible seafood an easy drive away. But we wouldn’t blame you if you went absolutely nowhere.

Getting here: drive or train to Diss then taxi (20 mins, special taxi rate)

Family-owned and run by parents Pam and Mark, and their daughters Katie and Laura. They have owned this land for almost thirty years, and spent the last fifteen re-wilding and landscaping it. After retiring from the fruit industry, Pam and Mark soon decided they needed a new challenge and spent 2 years planning and overseeing the building of the lodges and Igluhuts, helped by various family members. Since 2008 they have planted over 2,500 trees and hedges, seeded wildflower meadows and created a tranquil, restful getaway in the heart of the Suffolk countryside. They still continue to maintain the land themselves, while daughter Katie runs the business side of things.

“It is incredibly peaceful there with a real back-to-nature feel, but you’re also on the edge of the village, with 2 pubs and a shop an easy stroll away.”

We love
The stunning interiors: slightly quirky, slightly boutique and totally unique.

No kids or dogs, it’s all about the peace. Minimum stays (see Specifics). No WiFi except at reception. The accommodation isn’t totally secluded; there are 12 units across the whole site.

  • "Spent 4 blissful nights in a hut! These have been designed so cleverly and we felt relaxed as soon as we stepped inside! The bed was wonderfully comfortable, gorgeous views from every window, well-equipped kitchen area and the igluhut was so warm and cosy even with chilly temperatures outside (we visited at the end of October). We enjoyed sitting outside, especially round a fire on cold evenings and getting to watch the stars appear! And the sauna was lovely as well! It's also the perfect location to explore the surrounding area from. We enjoyed some of the gorgeous local cafes and restaurants, loved Sutton Hoo, and went on some great walks. We'll definitely be back!"

  • "We came here in September 2021 for our honeymoon. It did not disappoint! Absolutely perfect, with everything you need, from fire pit to Sauna. The igloo’s are beautiful, perfect for a couples getaway and to relax whilst being surrounded by nature. It made us fall in love with Suffolk and hope to come back to every year."

  • "Absolutely stunning place. The Igluhuts are amazing and the site is beautiful. Very happy with my stay and I'll definitely be returning."

  • "Had the best weekend away here. Everything was perfect: Lovely Igluhut which was spacious. We did an outdoor yoga class with Katie which was incredible; we did BBQs in the evening with the outdoor fire on melting marshmallows. Fab onsite shop with amazing local goods. Easy to get everywhere in Suffolk from here, including the seaside. Local pubs nearby too!"

  • "Just enjoyed a fabulous 4 night stay at Hawthorn Huts with family - 4 in a lake lodge 2 of us in an igluhut. Accommodation was fantastic and the site so peaceful - a real taste of the Suffolk countryside. Particularly enjoyed the darkness at night and seeing all the stars, which you don't get in an urban area. Highly recommend this place."

  • "We spent a wonderful weekend here in early August. Our igluhut was so perfect - private, tastefully decorated, cosy, extremely clean, well equipped - and the surrounding acres are so beautiful. Suffolk is a great county to explore, but we probably most enjoyed our time on the site - the saunas (bookable slots), fire pit (right outside each igluhut) and honesty shop (filled with so many delicious things) are really great touches. We hardly saw anyone all weekend, but the lovely owners Katie and Pam were there to see us off; they gave us a great tip for a stop off on our way back to London, which made our short break feel a little longer."

  • "We've just spent a lovely week in one of the beautiful igluhuts. We had such an amazing and relaxing time - I can't wait to come back. The igluhuts are perfectly equipped with everything you need and so beautifully decorated and cosy! The setting is idyllic and you almost feel like you have the place to yourself because it's so peaceful. Great location for some great walks and beach trips as well! Katie, Pam and Mark were really helpful whenever we needed anything and have thought of everything to make your stay perfect!"

  • "Absolutely one of the best UK getaways ever! The Iglhuts are so comfy, convenient and surprisingly spacious! Ideal accommodation that felt very private, despite sharing the grounds with other guests. The local area has a lot to offer and the hosts have impeccable service. Highly recommend!"

FAQs.

No, we are afraid that we don’t — this is is an adults-only site, so no children under 18.

We currently don’t have the facilities to allow pets, even the really cute and really well-trained ones. There is plenty of wildlife around the site though!

We don’t have WiFi in the huts, but we do have a high-speed hotspot at the office/honesty shop area that you can use at the outside table and chairs. Guests have reported that their mobile phones work perfectly in the huts though with strong enough 4G for video calls if you really can’t be disconnected.

Yes- you have two sauna sessions included in the price of your stay for short stays (2-4 nights) and 4 sessions included for week stays. Additional sessions are available at an additional cost of £20 per hour session payable locally.

We have a simple on-site booking board so that you can put your names down to reserve your private time slot when you get here — no need to pre-book before arrival.

Saunas are open from 7am to 10pm and bookings are done in one-hour time slots. You will find all of the details in your Information Book when you arrive.

Yes, we do provide towels for sauna use, and all we ask is that people re-use them during their stay to reduce any excessive washing and environmental impact.

Absolutely! Our nearest train station is Diss (direct line from London Liverpool Street or change at Ipswich from other destinations). We are then a 20-min taxi ride away. Once here we can help you organise bicycle hire, or if you wanted to explore the area on foot then there are loads of lovely walks to keep you busy. We are a 10-minute walk into the heart of the village where you will find 2 pubs and a small well-stocked shop.

No, we currently do not have a charger onsite and we do not allow charging from our regular plugs and electrical supply due to the low voltage across the site, which means the system could be tripped.

EV chargers seem to be popping up regularly now. Currently, the closest fast-charge to us is at the Co-op in Halesworth (15 mins drive). There are also large charging stations on the A12 at Martlesham, and at Friday Street Farm shop further up the A12, near the Aldeburgh turning. Our best recommendation for the most up-to-date information is to consult with your in-car app, or with google as our information may not be up to date to the minute based on the rate that charging points are being installed.

Lots of lovely lovely produce, including cheeses and chocolate.
