Beautifully pared-back 2-bedroom cottage on a private estate near Balmoral, with breathtaking landscapes all around (sleeps 4)
Space & setting.
A former farmhouse turned minimalist escape, this is a heaven for 1 or 2 couples or a small family to revel in its glorious natural surrounds. Set on the private Gairnshiel Estate 10 miles from Balmoral, these landscapes have been beloved by royals for centuries — indeed Queen Victoria and George V hunted grouse and walked upon these very hills and dales back in the day. Enjoy your own explorations with the scent of gorse on the breeze; hike, swim in the rivers, or book 4×4 adventures amongst the more rugged terrain, and trout fishing nearby.
Inside, the mood is unhurried, homely, and comforting; perfect suited to both long golden days and cosy dark evenings. Windows frame nothing but ancient trees, rolling hills, and the ever-shifting Highland skies; interiors are deliberately pared back to keep the focus firmly on the spectacular views. Think Scandinavian-inspired design, soft lighting, tactile linens and simple pleasures, designed for days that just flow. Deep chairs invite you to curl up with a book and the garden offers a peaceful spot for morning coffees or a barbeque under the stars. Easy does it.
Getting here: you’ll need to drive. The nearest airport is Aberdeen, and it’s 1 hr 20 mins from there; 2 hours from Edinburgh.

“We came to visit Scotland from Belgium and fell in love with Royal Deeside and decided to move here. Being outdoorsy, we looked for a house with incredible views so we could disconnect from our busy lives, and we ended up custodians of the Gairnshiel Estate, with its historic main Lodge and 3 cottages. Our son Maarten did the interiors for all 4, including some unusual touches from Belgium, our home country, which he has brought to life here.” Eric and Hilde
