Space & setting.

Once an ancient inn, now a vibrant cottage-style house at the forest fringe of a 15,000-acre private estate in Aberdeenshire, this is is a place for full immersion in the outdoors with friends or family. Peek out of any window and you’ll see native trees unfurling, sheep grazing and paths inviting incursions into the rugged wilderness. It’s insanely beautiful — and very quiet. Roam across the moors, explore ancient woodland, swim in cool, clear rivers or simply wander along to the unique BYOB pub – The Glen Dye Arms – to play records with fellow music afficionados.

For those who don’t want to stray far from the hearth (or if the weather hems you inside), there’s plenty to do at the homestead, too. Steam and ice away stresses of everyday life in the sauna; soak and stargaze from the rustic hot tub and listen to vinyl in the colourful lounge. Day trips to beaches, castles, even the Balmoral Estate are easy, plus you can roost in the garden’s artist’s studio to leaf through books and get creative with your kids.

Getting here: best to drive (40 mins from Aberdeen airport), but you can train to Stonehaven, then taxi (35 mins)

Owners of Glen Dye Estate

“In 1990, Caroline and I left our jobs in music and design and moved from South London to Glen Dye. Our first son was six months old and we wanted to live our life in the countryside, surrounded by dogs, chickens and horses. So, we packed our bags, sold our house and off we went. Glen Dye is a magical place which has been in my family for 7 generations, since the 1840s. We knew that the main house was in pretty rotten condition; it had no heating and no functioning electricity. But it is a beautiful house in an incredible location and we had sold our home in London and so were armed with the cash, optimism and energy to renovate it — but perhaps we should have been paying better attention when we agreed to take on the wider estate. The place was on its knees, deep in debt and profoundly neglected. The 20 houses were derelict, the farms in need of love. So, in between other jobs that allowed us to pay our way we slowly started to renovate the place. It was often very hard. It took around 25 years. But we loved Glen Dye with a passion bordering on insanity and that drove us forward. And now we’re there. We always wanted to create a holiday business, to welcome people to this unusually wonderful place. And we knew that we wanted to do things really well, to be world class; original, unusual, beautiful, comfortable. Our dream is becoming a reality and our doors are open! When we say Cuttieshillock is ancient, we mean it. For centuries it was an inn, and troops rested there before battle in the Jacobite Rebellion (nearly 300 years ago).” Owners, Charlie and Caroline

We love
The gorgeous mix of colours, textiles and artworks that make the place feel loved and lived-in.

A 3/4-night min stay (see Specifics). You’ll need a car to get here. Very rural; occasional storms can cause power cuts and internet failures.

  • "Thank you so much for our stay - we absolutely loved it and can't imagine there will be many that will get the opportunity to have the place just for 2. Really hope we get the chance to stay there again. It's so well kitted out - fab kitchen, bathrobes always make me happy, amazingly comfy bed and lovely bed linen and towels. It's definitely fuelled our fire for a move to the country even more!"
