Built at the end of a working croft on the Isle of Lewis (and what feels like the edge of the world), the cabin faces right out to sea, with nothing but distant slopes to interrupt the cinematic views. Floor-to-ceiling windows in every room bring you closer to the wildly beautiful landscape; cleverly placed mirrors reflect it from every angle. The interiors invite the outdoors in, with the soft greys of a moody sky, the mottled black of wet rocks slick with salt, the freshness of fizzing sea foam.
There’s plenty around to explore – from Neolithic stone circles and ancient ruins to hidden lochs and otherworldly beaches – or you can simply stay put and soak up your surroundings. Walk the cliffs to discover secret coves or watch ships passing by and glimpse local wildlife from the spotting scope. Then as evening rolls in, the fireside beckons for front-row seats to a show you won’t want to miss; incredible night skies and if you’re really lucky, the Northern Lights.

- Visit the resting place of a Viking King at the ruins of St Brigid temple, a short walk from the house, and drink from St Birgid’s well, where cold fresh water is filtered through the local Lewisian gneiss rock, before setting off to explore the local coastline by foot.
- Go surfing or bodyboarding at nearby Eoropie beach, a long and exposed stretch of sand that picks up the smallest bit of swell from across the Atlantic.
- Climb the narrow stone staircase to the top of Carloway Broch, the ruins of an ancient stone tower, for sweeping views of Loch an Duin below (30 mins’ drive).
- Feel mystery tingle the air and time stand still at the Callanish Standing Stones, a striking 5,000-year-old stone circle dating back to the Neolithic era – and possibly older than Stonehenge. Overlooking the sprawling serenity of Loch Roag, it’s thought this was a place for ceremony and rituals.
- Try the award-winning Isle of Harris gin, made from sugar kelp seaweed hand-picked by a local diver, and distilled in the small village of Tarbert.
- Pack a picnic and go beach-hopping along the spectacular coast: drive 45 mins to Garry, where emerald hills slope down into the sea and waves lap against towering stacks of Lewisian stone, or head further afield to Seilebost and Luskentyre for wind-swept dunes and Caribbean-blue waters on a clear, sunny day (1 hour 40 mins’ drive).

FAQs.
This is a way of life on the Island and the owners will do their best to accommodate you. Your booking will remain open until you arrive but can’t be extended if others are booked in after you. If you cannot leave the island after your stay and have difficulty finding somewhere else to go, and if the house is free, the owners may be able to extend your stay, although additional charges will be at the discretion of the owners (cleaning charges may apply, for example).

There are a number of local restaurants. Most are a drive away, but Borve House Hotel is walkable and serves traditional meals and drinks.
There isn’t a firepit but there is a cosy woodburner and supply of logs inside!
