This is an experience like no other. Right on the edge of Snowdonia (Eryri) National Park, beside flower-strewn pastures and icy streams, is an ancient woodland of oak and Scots pine. And deep in its heart, 6 organic treehouses blend completely into their surroundings. Spaced far apart for privacy, they’re like something out of a fairytale with spiral stairs winding up to your living pod, which is clad in larch and brilliantly resembles a horizontal tree trunk.

But happily this is a modern-day fairytale and when you step inside you’ll be equally charmed with the rustic-luxe touches by a Swedish designer. Though simple, they are perfect: cosy double beds wrapped in Welsh wool blankets, wood-burning stoves, pretty lanterns, even warm forest showers. Kids will be in heaven, running across the wobbly bridges, soaring high on rope swings and making dens in the wood — leaving you free to sit to your deck and watch squirrels scampering and birds flitting above. Or come for a romantic escape: 3 treehouses have a hot tub and stargazing chair, but all are sublime and enveloped in peace. Everything you need is provided in innovative ways and you’ll never forget living 40ft up in the tree canopy for a couple of days. Utterly inspiring.

Owner Mark builds the treehouses himself, working with designer Peter (formerly one of the chief designers at the Science Museum in London) and a collective of local artisans, crafts people and eco builders. The idea for the business — like all the best business ideas — was born in the pub, and Mark has now been building treehouses for 11 years.

My Kip favourites

They love
“The eco consciousness of our set-up. The treehouses are built from sustainably harvested wood: the detail and furniture are made from bone-oak, found on our woodland floor. Water comes from a mountain spring and wood for the stoves comes from a sustainable local woodland.”

We loved
The peace, the stars, the area’s exotic sheep and the breathtakingly beautiful setting — come in spring for carpets of bluebells.

Books up months in advance; plan early. Min 2 nights, checking in on Wed/Fri/Sun. No mains electricity but everything you need is provided in innovative ways. No BBQs/firepits — simple catering is best. BYO towels; see Sustainability. Sorry, no dogs.

  • "The most amazing holiday we have been on. Chop wood, shower outdoors, swing on your own rope swing, wine by the log fire, sleeping amongst the treetops. Could not have asked for more. The warmest welcome when we arrived. Just perfect. Never, ever wanted to leave."

Sustainability.

Full marks. The treehouses are created using sustainably harvested wood, mostly sourced from within 15 miles of the site. The detail and furniture is made from bone-oak. All water comes from a mountain spring and is filtered; the warm forest showers are powered by woodburners, which use logs from a sustainably managed local woodland. If you want to arrive by train (in Machynlleth) the owners offer pick up/drop off. All shampoo, soap, dishwashing liquid and cloths are eco friendly, as are the cleaning products. Their laundrette is powered by Solar energy, and has an indoors passive drying system. NB, towels use up an enormous amount of energy to wash, so guests are kindly asked to bring their own.

Surrounds.

  • Explore the beautiful ‘Fron Fawr’ (Big Heart) woodlands, a mix of oak and Scots pine woven with green mosses, bluebells and fern, alongside rushing mountain streams. Keep your eyes peeled for otters, hare, foxes and badgers, and look up to see red kite and buzzards swoop above the tree canopy.
  • Amazing walks start from your front door, and wild swims are a mile away. Or drive 5 miles to climb Wales’ most-magical mountain, Cadair Idris.
  • Wander to the pub, a mile away, which has very good food, local beers and a large garden.
  • Great restaurants are a 10-15 min drive away, everything from 2* Michelin (Ynyshir Hall) to incredible pizzas (Mawddach Pizzeria).
  • The area’s brilliant for mountain biking, with the Dyfi Bike park close by and marked trails along bridleways and forest paths. If you’re feeling brave try the exhilarating ‘Cli-MachX’, a steep off-road trail with rocky jumps and an epic final descent.
  • Mark recommends the pretty market town of Machynlleth: colourful houses, friendly cafes and a splendid Victorian clock tower.
  • The Dyfi Distillery won Best Gin at the British Food Awards 2 years running; swing by for a tasting.
  • Day trip to fabulous beaches at Aberdyfi and Ynyslas (15 miles).

A treehouse holiday is perfect for children aged 4+. Younger children may find the spiral staircases, candles and wobbly bridges etc. tricky. There is no lower age limit – but young children need to be carefully supervised when up in the treehouse.

Cots for infants are not provided – so you may need to bring a travel cot if you have a very young child.

The treehouses have a double bed and two singles (as a bunk) – ideal for a family of four. But, if your family is a little bigger, each treehouse has a day-bed, suitable for a third child.

30% deposit on booking, with the balance due 12 weeks prior to stay.

You may catch a glimpse of another but they are very spaced out across the woodland. You feel utterly private.

Three of the six treehouses have a hot tub but it is not possible to specify at time of booking. If a hot tub is available, you will be offered this by the owner after you book. It is not possible to guarantee a hot tub before you make a booking.
