Proof that great things come in small packages, these off-grid cabins in North Wales are dwarfed by the vast Dee Valley that cradles them, a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. There’s a real sense of the owners’ reverence for the landscape throughout – not only is furniture beautifully hand-crafted from local oak but the cabins are designed to have as little impact as possible on their surroundings, with solar power, eco-friendly bath products, compost toilets and spring-fed water. Kingsized beds are tucked beneath huge windows that frame views of the dramatic valley, so that you can snooze under the stars and rise with the sky’s buzzards, red kites and barn owls.

The blonde and black interiors offer a touch of uncluttered Scandi style, but you’ll still find a few treats to inspire you to switch off digitally: a cosy log-burner, old-school cassettes (everything from ABBA and Nina Simone to Nineties hip-hop), board games, books, and – of course – high-quality coffee-making equipment for that essential morning cup. Outside, buttercups, orchids and knapweed carpet the valley, there’s a totally off-grid sauna tucked away in a quiet corner of woodland and you’re a short distance from some of the area’s loveliest walking trails, including one down into Llangollen. Come alone, bring your dog, bring your partner. Unplug.

Inside Tarporley Shacks, Cheshire

It all started a few years ago. Harry and George had always had a keen interest in building and constructing things — initially, it was treehouses, speakers and furniture, then they built their first cabin on Harry’s family farm. For a small structure, it was a little more complex than you might think. With composting loos, solar power, kitchen, bathroom and bedroom all integrated into a small space, the process threw up all sorts of challenges. Though it was stressful, they were delighted to create such a unique holiday experience with such a low carbon impact, and went on to create more. Their aim is to unlock amazing places for holiday makers all over the UK.

The solitude and peace, in such incredible surroundings.

We love
The incredible views, which stretch for miles.

Stays are Fri-Mon, or Mon-Fri only (3/4 nights). No WiFi. The locations are truly off grid; the surrounding area can be muddy and hostile in the winter months.

  • "My girlfriend and I stayed for for 2 nights and we couldn’t have asked for a better time to reset and recharge from our busy lives in the city. The walks in the surrounding area were amazing and waking up to the views looking out over the hillside was dreamlike. We had everything we could ever have needed in the cabin to make our stay super comfortable and really memorable - we will definitely be coming back!"
