In a subtropical garden on the quieter edge of Polperro are a pair of design-led hideaways that feel more Hamptons escape than classic Cornish cottage. The brand-new Lodge sleeps 4; all rustic wood-panelled warmth, breezy whites and playful Americana touches gathered from the owners’ travels – a suspended canoe being the quirkiest. The larger Palm Court sleeps 12 so is perfect for big gatherings or milestone celebrations, complete with a games room, pool table, kayak and surfboards. Whichever you book, you’ll get run of the gardens and hot tub, as only 1 unit is rented at a time. So let’s state the obvious here: if you book the Lodge you get masses of outdoor space to yourselves.

Pretty Polperro is just 10 minutes’ walk, with bakeries, delis and award-winning pasties; the nearest pub is a 3-minute wander, with more tucked around the harbour for live music and fresh seafood. Spend peaceful days on golden beaches or visit foodie Fowey and kayak down the river. Zip to the Eden Project or zipwire at Adrenaline Quarry. It’s heaven here in summer, but actually our favourite time to visit is out of season: fewer people, incredible sunsets, moody skies, sea swims and beach saunas. If you’re not bound by school holidays come then. The SW coastal path offers glorious walking year round, then you get to roll back here to pour a drink, light the woodburner and drop a record on. And if you’re a digital nomad, you’re in luck: there’s plenty of space to pull up a laptop so why limit your stay to a weekend?

Getting here: drive, or train to Looe (from mainline station Liskard) then taxi (10 mins)

“The colonial-style Palm Court was built by an American architect in the 1930s, its large wide steps and sweeping verandah channelling the Hamptons or New England. We’ve reflected this idea in its interiors, using natural materials – wood, bamboo and jute –  to create a calm, unified backdrop, layered with coffee-table books that invoke a glamorous holiday lifestyle (Ibiza, surfing), personal artefacts from around the world, and modern, bright colour pops of art, and discs by our favourite artists on the walls. We wanted it to be totally unique, and full of interesting, uplifting things. Palm Lodge echoes this breezy American sophistication, but combines it with the warmth of a cosy ranch-style cabin. Throughout there is a distinct nod to our love for Americana and to the iconic aesthetic of Ralph Lauren’s interiors. The kitchen’s white tongue and groove gives it such a clean fresh feel of being by the coast, but without a starfish or sailboat in sight!” Owner, Luca

“The palm trees at the front of the property, which instantly make you feel like you’re on holiday when you see them.”

We love
The various curated playlists, each perfect for a different holiday mood. Luca’s husband is a bigwig in the music industry so has impeccable taste.

  • "We enjoyed a family holiday (6 adults and 5 children) in Palm Court. The house is absolutely beautiful with plenty of space! The hot tub and pool table were a massive hit. The beds were extremely comfortable with gorgeous bedding. The kitchen had everything we needed and we used the BBQ in the garden. We walked into the village most days which is so pretty. Luca has written out very helpful instructions with recommendations of beaches, shops, pubs etc. We walked along the coast to Talland Bay which was lovely. We also drove to Readymoney Cove which was fantastic - perfect for swimming and sand for digging in! Luca has been a wonderful host and we would highly recommend Palm Court." !

  • Polperro has all the romance of a Cornish fishing village – narrow lanes, colourful cottages, a pretty harbour and salty-air pubs. The Blue Peter Inn is Luca’s favourite, all cheerful chaos and live music at weekends.
  • Dine at OXOX; stylish and modern but in a relaxed way (our favourite vibe). Order the lamb scrumpets with salsa verde, then the fig frangipane with Cornish clotted cream. Job done.
  • Walk the coastal path to Polruan – 6 miles of dramatic cliffs and big sea views. Or stroll easier stretches around Talland Bay; turquoise waters, an ice cream kiosk, and beach cafes selling ice-cold rose at sunset.
  • Lantic Bay is a showstopper of a beach. Expect a steep walk down, jaw-dropping views, and that delicious ‘secret cove’ feeling once you arrive.
  • Swim and sauna at Polkerris Beach, then refuel with fish & chips and a pint at the Rashleigh Inn.
  • Visit Fowey by ferry – hop across for riverside dining, independent shops and long lunches at spots like Appleton’s or Pintxo. Feels like a mini adventure without going far.
  • Take kids crabbing off Polperro’s harbour wall and on day trips to the Monkey Sanctuary, Adrenaline Quarry, Charlestown and the Eden Project. Or, simply to the beach at Looe; buckets and spades, picnics, paddling, kites, ice creams, your childhood revisited.
