From the outside, this cottage gives very little away. But step inside and owner Debbie’s eccentric dolls-house vision presents itself: candy stripes and florals, raspberry pinks, yellow gingham, old wooden furniture, patterned lampshades and a nostalgic record player. It’s thoroughly playful but not remotely twee, and feels joyful to be in. There’s an old dining table for suppers and board games, a cosy sitting room with a woodburner and garden views. Upstairs, a pretty king and twin room make it perfect for friends or a family of 4, and there’s a sofabed for extra guests – although we’d be very happy holing up here as a couple and having the whole colourful little house to ourselves.

Outside sits a patio and hammock, then great sweeps of lawn and a field beyond – so plenty of room for children and dogs to race around . Debbie and her family live in the old rectory across the grounds, so you’re not entirely alone, but there’s a lovely sense of space around the cottage; at night it’s completely dark, and quiet enough to hear the owls. And you’re in a brilliant pocket of West Wight: 5 minutes from Yarmouth, with Freshwater Bay, Tennyson Down and the big, wilder beaches of the west coast all within easy distance.

Debbie owner of Old Rectory Cottage

“We moved here from the British Virgin Islands, returning to the Isle of Wight where my husband grew up and still has family. The cottage was already in the grounds – a rather dated former granny annexe – and I had a very particular vision for its next life: a colourful little doll’s house rental, full of personality and fun, that children would love just as much as adults. More than anything, I wanted it to become part of the holiday itself – the sort of place children remember years later, along with days on the beach and adventures they had around the island.” Owner, Debbie

“That it’s now a little jewel box – you’d never guess from the outside quite how colourful and fun it is.”

We love
The clever clash of so many patterns and colours.

  • "The best stay! It’s a brilliant location, so quiet and surrounded by beautiful gardens. The decor of the cottage is stunning too - every little detail has been thought about and there is everything you need, even little dog towels and bowls if needed. "

  • "Absolutely perfect accommodation. The cottage is gorgeous - decorated beautifully and phenomenally comfortable. The quiet location is ideal for relaxed days by the fire, and yet everything is close and convenient enough to be able to explore and enjoy the island. Honestly, do yourself a favour and book a holiday on this gorgeous island and at this phenomenal cottage!"

    Compton Beach, National Trust
  • Swim at Freshwater Bay first thing in the morning or head down in the late afternoon and wander along the beach as the sun goes down. It’s especially magical under a full moon.
  • The Piano Cafe at Freshwater Bay does a cracking brunch; perfect if you went for that early morning swim.
  • Yarmouth is just 5 mins’ drive away, with its lively harbour, pubs, restaurants and bakeries.
  • Walk or cycle the old railway line from Yarmouth to Freshwater, a lovely traffic-free route that follows the River Yar; you can hire bikes in Yarmouth.
  • Book a slap-up fish lunch at The Hut for something special, or try Smoking Lobster in Cowes or Ventnor for a more experimental take on island seafood.
  • Climb Tennyson Down for huge sea views from the monument, then drop down for a pint at The Highdown Inn afterwards.
  • Kids will love the aqua park, mini golf and meeting animals at Tapnell Farm. Without them, head straight for the floating sauna and cold-water experience here. There’s yoga and padel too.
  • Time the tide for Compton or Brook Bay and set off for a long walk along the sand – both wonderfully wild stretches of the island’s west coast. When conditions are right, there’s brilliant surfing and kitesurfing here; lessons are available, too.
  • Explore Brighstone Woods, then undo all your virtuous walking with tea and cake at Chessell Pottery Café.
