In farming, a fallow field is one that’s been given the year off. Owners Ellie and Mat liked the idea so much they named their whole place after it. This is a place of rest. Four acres of meadow, hill and woodland wrap around an old pub, in a quiet hamlet between Frome and Mells. The land isn’t doing much beyond growing ox-eye daisies and gathering a small audience atop the hill every evening for killer sunsets. Guests are encouraged to follow its lead and do very little too. Awake to birdsong rather than an alarm; bring a couple of books you’ve been meaning to read (great coffee awaits, the perfect accompaniment); walk to the Talbot Inn for a pint and taxi home, back to a sky full of stars. Or stay on there for dinner – the food is excellent.

Couples will love Fern, a dark green shepherd’s hut with a mini garden, where a wood-fired hot tub promises indulgent soaks. Or Willow, up on the hill beneath an old oak, with a firepit in the meadow and sweeping views over the valley. Families and friends can take The Guesthouse, once part of the old inn, now sleeping 4. Its butter-yellow kitchen is sunshine itself; the orange kettle and checkerboard shower tiles equally joyful. And if doing nothing starts to wear thin, Frome’s independents are just minutes away, as is Bruton, home to the amazing Hauser & Wirth gallery.

Getting here: drive, or train to Frome then taxi (10 mins)

“Mat’s family are in the brewery and pub business, so when we took on the Vobster Inn, which had stood empty for some time, you might have expected the taps to go back on! Instead, after 5 years in Frome, we were craving more space and more nature for our 3 young boys, so we came here to rewild the land instead. I’m a nutritional therapist, and we grow flowers from seed for every guest. Yurts, a cabin and a little makers’ shop are on the way, and we hope to host the odd evening of live music, food trucks and pop up saunas in due course. So the old pub may get its regulars back after all… just not quite the way anyone expected.” Owners Ellie & Mat

  • "We absolutely loved the Guesthouse itself, it was extremely clean and comfortable. We also fell in love with the modern aesthetics which make the home feel really luxurious. We have come away feeling inspired to decorate our own house! It is set in the most beautiful grounds and a great location that was easy to find. It has the most beautiful touches and small details too. It’s got some lovely pubs close by and down the road to Babbington House. Frome is really close by too! Ellie and Mat were incredible hosts. Super responsive and helpful. Nothing felt too much trouble. It was lovely to meet them both. We could have chatted for hours! We feel such a pull to return one day, we loved our gorgeous restorative stay. Thank you Ellie and Mat, what a dream set up you have!"

  • "We had the most magical weekend at Ellie’s place! It was just as described and even nicer than the photos. Every detail has been considered and it felt like a really luxurious stay in a beautifully interior designed home. Location was great for getting to local spots in Bruton and Frome and we even could walk to Mells to the Talbot for dinner (where there was a summer festival on). Ellie went above and beyond with recommendations and communication and she even left us some gorgeous toys and a play mat for our little one. We will definitely be back."

No, just Fern. Willow has a more dramatic setting instead. If you book Fern you might like to get the hot tub heated for your arrival (additional £40).

Fern is 20m from the car park at the bottom of the hill. Willow is about 200m away at the top. Both feel completely secluded.
