Space & setting.

Light streams into this beautiful, airy space in Suffolk. It comes as no surprise that the owner is a photographer; the decoration is perfectly pared back and calming with plenty of natural textures and a Scandi feel – poured concrete floors, whitewashed beams, sheepskin rugs and sisal matting. There are 2 double bedrooms and a sofabed, and there’s space for everyone to gather around the whitewashed farmhouse table at breakfast time, before finding a sofa on which to open a book or just lie back and look up at Suffolk’s vast skies, framed by a picture window and skylights.

Beyond the glass is garden; the Georgian main house and this contemporary outhouse share 6 acres, with pathways cut through tall grasses. Pets are welcome, as are children, who will love bouncing on the trampoline before days spent shell seeking on the coast. But we’d come here with friends, for long windswept walks and lunches at Suffolk’s famed seaside shacks, then afternoons chilling in this incredible space, bathed in a flood of natural light.

Getting here: drive, or train to Saxmundham and taxi (15 mins)

“We moved here from London to live in the old vicarage with our young family. There was a rundown granny flat across the courtyard, next to a barn and stable. Our architect friend suggested linking all 3 spaces together to create a separate property, and our vision was a comfortable integration of classic and modern.” Owner, Julia

My Kip favourites

She loves
“The huge picture window looks out onto the garden, and even when it’s too cold to go outside, the light streams in with the doors flung open. I love to do yoga on the underfloor-heated concrete floor and stretch up to the clouds scurrying across the skylight.”

We love
The minimalist design. Everything inch of the space has been thoughtfully curated, with an exquisite blend of furnishings and art inspired by Julia’s travels.

You may not love
A minimum 3-night stay. The owners live next door, but it’s a courtyard away and you have your own private entrance. The kitchen is simple.

  • "I’m loathe to write a review as I feel like I’m giving away a little secret that I’d rather keep to myself! This is basically my dream home… historical outhouses of peely, painted brick and wobbly walls, joined by a glass box of whitewashed beams and poured concrete floors. Julia has such an incredible eye for design and for curating little vignettes of curiosity that you spend your whole stay feeling incredibly lucky that someone has allowed you to share such a special space. Julia and Ben are the most wonderful hosts. I can’t wait to return."

  • Walk up the lane to the Juniper Barn shop where you can find homemade scones, cakes, sausage rolls and excellent soup. The renowned Friday Street farm shop and butchery is just 3 miles further.
  • Suffolk’s beautiful coastline is a 20-minute drive: Walberswick, Thorpness, Orfordness, Sizewell.·Bring walking boots in winter and beach towels in summer.
  • We love Aldeburgh for top fish and chips, a tiny cinema, and a mosey along the wide high street — full of creative independents — and down onto the shingle beach.
  • Suffolk’s flat landscapes are ideal for walking and cycling. Start at Snape Maltings and follow the River Alde on foot through the marshes and rushes towards the sea. Or hire bicycles and follow trails through Tunstall Forest.
  • This is a real foodie area, with renowned seafood restaurants and shacks, like the Butley Oysterage and L’escargot sur mer. Or roll up your sleeves and do an artisan breadmaking class at The Two Magpies Bakery.
