Nestled among ancient Scots pines and heather-clad moorland, this cluster of hand-built eco cabins invites exploration of true wilderness and a proper unplug and recharge — whether you come alone, à deux or as a family (there are options for all). Each hideaway is its own little world. A candlelit cabin by the duck pond, where a Hebridean box bed looks up to the stars. A cosy bunkhouse with board games, banquette seating and forest views Or The Woodman’s Hut, hewn almost entirely from trees grown right here — a warm, whisky-sipping sort of space with sweeping views of the Northern Corries.

Days are slow here: follow deer tracks through the forest, walk or bike in Cairngorms National Park then loosen up in the sauna, or simply sit by the stream with a book. End each night looking up at a sky strewn with stars, wrapped in a blanket, sipping hot chocolate. This is off-grid living elevated to an adventurous kind of luxury.

Getting here: train to Aviemore, then taxi (20 mins)

“My parents arrived at Badanfhuarain as newlyweds in April 1974, making their first home in Travellers Cottage. They were the pioneers of The Lazy Duck, which they opened in 1999. Guided by guest needs and a wish to live gently on the land, they planted trees, adopted sustainable practices, and honoured those who came before us. I’ve recently taken it over from them, and am super excited to evolve the property with a little stylish uplift but the ethos as it’s always been. Visitors come for romance, adventure, and reflection. Artists, birdwatchers, and environmentalists alike find peace here. Ultimately, that’s what we’re all trying to do. Slàinte.” Owner, Roger

My Kip favourites

He loves
“The silence and the dark skies, the moorland and the forest; sitting by the pond and listening to the water slipping by.”

We love
The outdoor showers for the huts. Warm, and exhilarating all year round.

You may not love
A 3/4-night min stay, check in on Fri/Mon only. Huts have compost toilets in little outbuildings and bush showers (no indoor bathrooms). Phone reception is weak, but excellent WiFi across the site. Sorry, no pets.

Sustainability.

A ‘treading lightly’ ethos. Natural composting loos. Recycling. EV charging. Rewilding meadow and local land recovery programmes.

FAQs.

In 4pm / out 10am. It is self check in and you’ll be emailed instructions for a lock box 48 hours before your stay.

Totally reliable, business strength. It is also used for the co working space.

The huts are each in their nook of the forest, with the owner’s own home in the middle. You’ll likely see local folk coming to walk through to the moor, coming to the co-working space, and running their flower-growing business in the polytunnel. Space is shared here in a really wholesome way.

The whole ethos of this place is disconnecting from everyday life, and that takes at least 48 hours!
