Peak District National Park

The very best places to stay in

Peak District

The Peak District is full of contrasts. Wander the limestone dales near Castleton and you’ll discover secret caves, tumbling waterfalls, and pubs that have been quietly pouring ales for centuries. Head toward Bakewell and Chatsworth and you’ll find elegance, gardens, and history that gleam against the skyline. Up north, Edale and Kinder Scout reward walkers with skies that seem impossibly wide. Each corner is a patchwork of hamlets, woodland, rivers, and hills — a place for both adventure and quiet meandering. From the northern moors to the southern dales, this is England at its rugged, radiant best. See our Kip tips for the region below.

We love the Peaks for its blend of the wild and the welcoming. Our cottages and barns here sit in lovely villages, secreted behind dry-strone walls. They are the perfect base for rambling, cycling, or simply sitting with a book while the world rolls by — and all are near foodie pubs.

ARCHITECTURE.

Chatsworth House is the obvious one but we prefer Haddon Hall, a popular location in period dramas (such as the BBC’s Pride and Prejudice). You’ll likely visit for its fine art collection and blend of Tudor, medieval and Elizabethan architecture. But what’s not publicised is that small groups are sometimes allowed behind the formal gardens to discover hidden nooks, hedged mazes and ancient herb beds; ask discreetly at the office.

WITH KIDS.

The quickest way to their hearts? A trip to the Bluebell Dairy in Derby. There are unusual animals to meet (giant bunnies and miniature ponies), bonkers activities (sheep racing with Ewesain Bolt; a splat factory with giant foam cannons), and — best of all — over 26 ice cream flavours in their artisan dairy. Liquorice and orange cheesecake sounds mad but we’d love to try it.

SECRET KIP TIP.

Do the Curbar Edge ridge walk at sunset. Most visitors miss the way the evening sun sets the gritstone glowing, with the valley stretching endlessly below.

My Kip favourites

BEST ACTIVITY.

Walking. The Mam Tor circular walk is just 3km but spans some of the Edale Valley’s most dramatic scenery, with views out to Kinder Scout and the Derwent Moors from the main viewpoint. Tie it in with The Great Ridge if you want something longer.

MUST VISIT.

Dovedale Stepping Stones — a classic Peak District experience.

FOODIE TREAT.

The Old Original Bakewell Pudding Shop has been serving its famous puddings for generations, each one golden, gooey, and irresistible. The recipe’s secret has been lovingly guarded for decades, so every bite tastes like a little Peak District miracle!
