There’s nothing remotely conventional about Bonington. A derelict farm has been transformed into 4 wildly different places to stay, scattered across 15 acres of Leicestershire countryside: a converted hay barn, an old circular grain silo, a dramatic design-led space for 8 and a brilliantly reimagined farmhouse. Come à deux, with a few of your favourite people or take over the whole farm for up to 20.

Interiors are gorgeous and characterful throughout. Expect vintage furniture and playful art, velvet and zellige tiles, exposed beams and clever architectural details. Freya’s Farmhouse has its own Nordic sauna and wood-fired hot tub; Pamella’s Place has another hot tub and a brilliant outdoor cooking set-up. Then, open to all, there’s the Film House, a tiny private cinema hidden inside another converted grain store, swathed in mustard curtains. Add in massages, private yoga sessions, pizza kits, wine tastings and chefs on request and you could easily never leave the farm. Although you probably should, occasionally. Footpaths lead into the surrounding countryside, the village pub is a 10-minute walk away and the River Soar and Calke Abbey a little further. What’s more, trains from London reach East Midlands Parkway in around 90 minutes, followed by a 10-minute taxi. Country weekend, remarkably little faff.

Getting here: drive, or train to Loughborough / East Midlands Parkway, then taxi (10 mins)

Bonington Farm is the vision of husband-and-wife Sonya and Raffaele, whose backgrounds span design, photography, events and brand collaborations. Rather than making four versions of the same holiday rental, they’ve allowed each building to keep its own personality, filling them with vintage finds, bold colour, tactile materials and pieces that feel collected rather than ordered en masse. The 15-acre former farm is also used for shoots, events and wellness retreats, and Sonya and Raffaele live on site. The individual stays have their own private spaces though, so you’re not all sitting around one communal firepit making polite conversation with strangers.

They love
“The beautiful fabric bed headboards.”

We love
The quirky Film House, a converted grain store wrapped in mustard curtains, with deep sofas, a huge projector screen, Apple TV and sweets. Book it for a private film showing.

Below the flight path for East Midlands airport so you sometimes hear planes but you quickly stop noticing; ear plugs are provided for light sleepers. Pamella’s Place only has one bathroom.
