Tucked into the grounds of a storybook Tudor estate, these atmospheric cottages are where history and nature collide. Eight acres of meadows, woodland and lawns are woven together by a stream and spring-fed swimming pond, and at the heart is the main manor, where owners Lara and Benedict live with their young boys. The estate has witnessed centuries unfold and the former Stables and Old Lodge (once the gatehouse) are now filled with antique treasures and reclaimed pieces gathered across the years, giving them a timeless, country-house feel. The former sleeps 6, the latter 8 + 2 kids; or book both together for an amazing group stay.

Life here still flows with the rhythm of the land. You can collect fresh eggs for breakfast, and wander the abundant kitchen garden, bursting with flowers and vegetables (often for sale, as are hand-reared sausages). Children will love the feeling of freedom: paddling in the stream, building dens and meeting a lively menagerie of farm animals. As you’re on the edge of the Blackdown Hills AONB, there are miles of walking trails and cosy pubs nearby, plus the Jurassic Coast is just half an hour away. But you’ll honestly struggle to leave during your stay, lest you disturb the magic of this place. Lara can arrange massages in your cottage, as well as woodland meditation, cacao ceremonies and sound baths to help you properly reset. And for a real treat, book a farm-to-fork feast by the inglenook fireplace in the Tudor Hall.

Getting here: drive, or train to Taunton/Axminster then taxi (25 mins)

“I grew up in this house, a childhood spent wild and free — teatime by the stream with my donkeys, rescuing baby rooks, planting flowers with my mother, and watching the house’s renovations unfold. Years later, after completing a Masters in Byzantine Art and working at Christie’s in London and New York, I returned to rekindle those pastimes with my husband and children, and redo all the interiors for the estate’s next phase of life. My style celebrates the history and craftsmanship of each building, blending reclaimed and antique pieces. Our house and The Stables are full of character, including a 1570 inglenook fireplace, hidden cannonball, and ancient bills. I love creating spaces that feel lived-in, warm, and full of life, where each object tells a story and connects past and present.” Owners, Lara and Benedict

My Kip favourites

She loves
“The peace, the sound of the birds, lighting the woodburner, picking flowers and vegetables, checking the bee hives.”

We love
The blush-pink bathroom with its clawfoot soaking tub, and the stacks of books by cosy reading nooks.

The owners live on-site. You’ll need to supervise children around the animals and swimming pond. One upstairs bedroom in the Old Lodge has its bathroom downstairs.

  • "A wonderful stay. The estate is absolutely beautiful—peaceful, elegant, and full of charm. Lara has such an eye for detail, and you can really feel her passion for design in every room. Everything is stylish yet comfortable, with thoughtful touches throughout. Lara and Benedict, along with their lovely, kind and fun loving boys, made us feel so welcome. The kids especially loved helping feed the pigs, goats, and sheep—such a special touch that made their holiday unforgettable. The whole place is a perfect mix of period features and modern comfort, set in the stunning Somerset countryside. We left completely relaxed and can’t wait to come back. Highly, highly recommend!"

  • "Just returned from an enchanted stay. Lara, Benedict, and their two extraordinarily sweet natured boys, were beyond any expectations of hosts we have ever experienced in our many years of travel. Their hard work, creativity and excellent eye for detail, has created a rare experience for 95yr old visitors (my father in-law), to children and everyone in between. Beauty, space, comfort and cleanliness all go without saying. Altogether they have given our family a cherished memory in just a few days. Cannot recommend enough."
