Space & setting.

What holiday is not enhanced by a gentle spell in a barrel sauna, or a starlit wallow in a hot tub? This beautiful little house surrounded by farmland is an ideal launch pad for the very best Northumberland has to offer, from the Poison Garden at Alnwick Castle to the wide sweep of sand at the castle-topped Bamburgh beach, and strolls out towards the Cheviot Hills. And once you’ve filled your day with adventuring, you can retreat to this modern haven to recharge.

A decadently cosy master bedroom (replete with woodburner and freestanding tub) makes it gorgeous for a couple, but there’s a bunkbed room and trundle bed too, so up to 3 kids can stay in style. They’ll love playing in the willow tunnel and den by day. and swaddling up in blankets beneath the pines at dusk, listening for the hoot of owls and star spotting. Across the garden a lovely cabin provides additional indoor space, and a change of scene for rainy days. Sink into the green velvet sofas for a movie night over here — or treat the children to a Disney film while you adults chill in the hot tub. Should you be too relaxed to cook after all that, just wander into the village for fish and chips.

Getting here: drive, or train to Berwick upon Tweed then taxi (20 mins)

Hideaway owner, Hayley

“I was looking for a renovation project and persuaded my sister to join me on something halfway between her house in the North East and ours in Edinburgh. We found the property and fell in love with it (though it needed a lot of work), but the main draw was the surrounding woodland and farmland. We were very hands-on with the reno, particularly in the garden tackling the hard landscaping and creating the willow den. It’s been a great way to bring our 2 families together.”Owners Hayley and Natalie

My Kip favourites

They love
“The garden. The patio and deck areas allow you to enjoy sun or shade throughout the day, and on a clear night the stars are wonderful due to the low light pollution in the area.”

We love
The handmade kitchen and the Ercol sofa in the garden cabin.

You may not love
A road runs alongside the property, though not a busy one.
