A beautiful timber-framed annexe beside a Victorian manor, staying here feels like stepping into a design book. Faye Toogood curves meet Max Lamb textures, Malgorzata Bany forms sit alongside Vittorio Nobili modernist chairs, and a Jean Prouvé wall light casts its sculptural glow across a Dieter Rams shelving system. Even the art — Barbara Hepworth, Roger Hilton — feels like a privilege to pore over, while an extensive library of design, architecture and fashion invites slow hours of discovery. Outside, a west-facing courtyard catches the day’s last light, and though London is less than an hour away, the hush of this private road feels worlds apart.

Days here can flow gently: walks along the water meadows of the Itchen Valley followed by a pint at a proper pub; dinner at Pulpo Negro in nearby Alresford; or a wander through Winchester’s ancient streets and renowned Hambledon store. The South Downs roll out in every direction, dotted with excellent post-ramble inns; the New Forest offers wild ponies and woodland; and the coastline — from the Witterings to Mudeford — is an easy day trip. Return to your studio for books, calm, and the quiet satisfaction of staying somewhere so extraordinary.

Getting here: drive, or train from London to Winchester then taxi (15 mins)

Itchen Valley Studio on Kip Hideaways

“Holiday homes can sometimes be a bit sterile, but this is part of our home, and it’s full of the things we love. We use the space as an art studio, a library, and a place to gather with friends.”

My Kip favourites

They love
“The amazing walks through the Itchen Valley. From the doorstep, there’s a local loop that runs alongside the River Itchen, where you can spot trout, kingfishers and herons, with a stop in the picturesque Bush pub.”

We love
The gentle colour pallette, so calm and inviting, and the enormous library of inspiring books.
