You know that feeling when you turn off a road and everything suddenly goes quiet? Birds. The splashing of a fountain… and not a lot else? This superbly peaceful retreat is tucked into the landscaped grounds of a Grade-II listed Tudor estate. It once belonged to the family of avant-garde sculptor Naum Gabo, and his creative spirit still lives on through the studios and exhibition spaces he established here. Artist owner Jemimah Patterson now works and displays in them, and if the timing’s right you could catch one of her shows (or even blag a private studio tour, a killer thing to casually drop into conversations once you’re back home).

The double-height barn is all crisp Scandi calm and soft, nature-soaked views. A cantilevered terrace over the water is pure magic for sunset drinks (so romantic, in fact, it’s been the setting of marriage proposals, both planned and impromptu.) Upstairs, a king-sized mezzanine comes with a glorious roll-top bath for deep wallows with a good book; in the grounds there’s a tennis court to get all competitive on, plus Pansy & Primrose, a pair of naughty pygmy goats. Wander into the village for a local pint or hop in the car to visit Kent wineries, Sissinghurst Castle Garden, Camber Sands and Rye. Or… don’t. Wander around the hideaway in a dressing gown instead, barefoot, munching on seasonal treats from the walled garden – cherries, strawberries and plums. Then have a nap and oh, the day’s gone, it’s Golden Hour again, pop that Chapel Down cork and let’s sit outside. Heaven.

Getting here: drive, or train to Headcorn (direct trains from London Bridge) then taxi (5 mins)

Jemimah Weavers Rest

“We arrived at Weavers Cot in 2019 when we made the big move out of London with our young family. We fell in love with this part of Kent and the beautiful grounds of this Tudor estate. Former owner Naum Gabo was one of the forerunners of Constructivism and influenced the 20thC abstract art movement. His family not only housed his collection here, but were artists themselves. Fabulous showing spaces and studios were designed in the grounds, and I still use them today.” Owner, Jemimah Patterson

My Kip favourites

She loves
Sinking into the freestanding roll-top bath and listening to the water fountain splashing into the pond outside.

We love
Jemimah’s glorious art on the walls, and that stunning herringbone floor.

You may not love
Set in the owners’ grounds, but you’re completely private. No swimming or fishing in the pond. Sorry, no pets.

  • "We had a very peaceful and relaxing stay. We arrived later than expected, and even in the dark and rain Jemimah came out to welcome us, show us around and explain everything! Jemimah has thought of everything, from the exceptional design, to the careful touches and wonderful art! It created the perfect space for our PROPOSAL! It will forever hold a special place in our memories and was the dream proposal. Thank you!"
