Space & setting.

Risen from the ruins of a Victorian workhouse is a suite of cabins within a secret garden that’s as enchanting as its storybook address in Great Snoring. It’s the dreamiest sanctuary for 2, for those weekends that demand something extra special. The owners were tempted to live in it themselves, but luckily for us, they built their own house next door instead, and filled this one with lovely touches like seasonal flowers, a table inlaid with a map of the area, tactile sheepskins and leather chairs, and Norfolk Natural Living toiletries with scents inspired by coastal walks and English country gardens.

The seasons dance through the 2 acres of tranquil walled garden, where you’ll feel hidden away from the world. Spring and summer stays are idyllic: sunshine, brimming flowerbeds, and watching kites, oystercatchers, wagtails and swallows swoop and sing overhead. But when the weather turns, you get to watch the rain through the endless panels of glass as the woodburning stove glows with warmth. The light streams in year-round, spotlighting furnishings by Birdie Fortescue and textiles by Weaver Green. Norfolk’s North Coast is famous for its sandy beaches, nature reserves, migratory birds and the largest seal colony on Blakeney Point, so build in time for day trips — or just hunker down and stay put. Who could blame you?

Getting here: you’ll need to drive

Sally, owner of Walled Garden, Norfolk

“Our house started life as a workhouse — built in 1836 to house 250 occupants. It was later used as a hospital, then by the military, before falling into total disrepair. We purchased the derelict site in 2013 and built a contemporary family home attached to the original chapel, where we now live. We gradually turned the walled enclosure into a garden, planted with beautiful borders and areas of wildflower, then added the cabins, which we lived in ourselves for a spell.” Owners, Mark and Sally

My Kip favourites

They love
“In the evenings, we love to light a campfire in the woodland area and cook up a paella.”

We love
The play of light through the planting as the sun lowers in golden hour. Take blankets out to the garden with a glass of something chilled to enjoy it.

You’ll need a car to get here but can hire ebikes to explore. Sorry, no dogs as the owners have 2 dogs.

  • "What a fabulous place! We had planned lots of things to do while we were here but in the end didn't want to leave this beautiful place, just chilled out and enjoyed the views and birdlife. Totally chilled now and don't want to go home. Will definitely be back again."
