You book this place thinking it’s about beaches: Woolacombe’s huge stretch of sand, Croyde’s surf, seafood lunches. But somewhere between the giant bath and the way evening light pours in, you realise this Nordic-inspired barn is really about something else entirely: space, quiet and completely switching off. Once a home for cows, it’s been carefully reimagined into a calm retreat where soaring ceilings, soft textures and Scandinavian colours let the whole place breathe. Outside, 3 acres of countryside unfold around you – wild hares dart through the fields and green views roll for miles.

There’s creativity woven in, too. In the next-door stable, the ‘Garden Gallery’ showcases owner Ted’s photography, print and casting work, inspired by the surrounding landscape. After a day or two here, you’ll start noticing those same details yourself – shifting light across the hills, silver-green grasses moving in the wind, dramatic skies rolling in from the coast. And the coast is very much worth exploring: swim, surf or paddleboard, horse ride along the beach, take a boat trip to puffin-filled Lundy Island or spend the day wandering Exmoor’s open moorland and deep wooded valleys. But when you come back, do very little. Wander to The Rock Inn for mussels by the fire, or just light the firepit in the subtropical garden and sit to watch  the stars appear overhead (North Devon’s dark skies are some of the best in England). Ted and Sam created this place as an antidote to fast-paced living – and after a few days here, you’ll understand exactly why.

Owners Sam and Ted both work in the creative industry, and moved from London to Devon in search of a better work/life balance. They’ve spent several years slowly restoring their old farmhouse and its adjacent barn, putting real thought into every detail.

My Kip favourites

They love
“The peace here: there’s very little noise in our hamlet of 20 houses. In the day you’re serenaded by birdsong. At night, you can hear owls hoot and watch bats flit by.”

We love
The unexpectedly quirky touches, such as a gramaphone speaker tucked in the kitchen rafters.

You may not love
The barn is adjacent to the owners’ house, though they are mindful of your privacy.

  • “What a lovely place! Often you look at pictures and the actual place is not quite what you hoped. It’s clear that Sam and Ted have put a lot of time, energy and thoughtful creativity into this delightful place. We loved the little stylish touches, which felt a bit like an interior design gem - elegant lighting, unique bathroom carved wood shelf, and polished concrete heated floors to mention a few. Indeed, they have created a place that they would be happy to call their home, if they need it to and this shows. The place is surrounded by pleasant green fields, located in a beautiful part of Devon, near several excellent beaches, Exmoor national park and lots more we didn’t have time to explore, but will have to go back to do so! Sam and Ted are delightful, friendly and happy to help with anything you might need to make your stay a good one. On reflection after our brief week’s stay, I would say that the place and stay made it feel like a beautiful new home away from home, a breath of fresh air, without the familiar boring stresses you have of keeping or being in your own home."

  • "We had a fantastic time staying in this beautiful, luxurious villa / barn. Immediately after booking, Sam contacted us to check if we had any special requirements for our stay and provided an extensive guide to everything there was to do in the area. The place itself was finished to an outstanding level of detail, very clean and modern in terms of appliances, but all put together in sheek way that made it feel like a 5 star resort. Being mostly open plan, it was great for us with a young baby to keep an eye on her whilst cooking dinner; of which the kitchen is superbly equipped - we even cooked a roast! Bedroom and bathroom was equally well finished and we hope to be able to stay again some time. Thanks!!"
