This area is the sort of place people used to disappear to for lost weekends in the 90s. Someone would bring oysters. Someone else a stack of magazines and a bottle or 2 of something cold. Shoes would become irrelevant by Saturday morning. Tucked just behind the dunes at Camber Sands, this beautifully restored beach house is all pale limewashed walls, soft linen curtains, ticking fabrics and light that shifts constantly throughout the day. The owners first fell for Camber years ago, drawn in by its huge skies and slightly cinematic atmosphere – the same raw coastal backdrop that famously framed Corinne Day and Kate Moss’s iconic The Face shoot. You can still feel traces of that mood here. Relaxed, understated, quietly cool.

The beach is a 2-minute barefoot wander away, though you may find yourself moving slowly once you’ve settled into the rhythm of the house. Everything has been designed for easy stays: a wild garden with an alfresco shower for rinsing salty skin or wetsuits; a big sofa for sprawling after dinner; 3 calm bedrooms with blackout curtains for lie ins and afternoon naps; a wood burner for chillier evenings. And then there’s the wider area. Go for toasted banana bread and coffee at Leo’s on the beach. Pop into Rye for antique hunting and a mooch around brilliant independents. Or head to Dungeness, with its rare desert-like beauty, almost otherworldly in feel. Then back home for a long evening in the garden, listening to the crashing waves as the tide rolls in.

Getting here: drive, or train to Rye then taxi (10 mins)

“We first came to Camber on one of our earliest weekends away together, and instantly fell for its huge skies, wild dunes and romantic, slightly cinematic feel. Years later, we’ve created The Dunes as a way of holding onto that feeling – somewhere deeply connected to the sea and beach, where people can gather with friends, walk barefoot back from the beach and feel entirely removed from everyday life.” Owners Dan & Charlie

“There’s something about the atmosphere of the house that’s hard to put into words. It just has an immediate feel-good energy to it. It feels uplifting, easy and comforting all at once.”

We love
The sun-trap garden, with its alfresco shower, such a lovely way to start the day.

You may not love
Only one bathroom. 2/3-night min stay which rises to 7 during July, Aug and over Christmas. An additional cleaning fee (see FAQ).

  • "We had a perfect and peaceful few days in Camber. Charlie’s house is beautifully decorated, clean and cosy. We loved the wood burning stove in the evenings. The beds were wonderfully comfortable with immaculate bed linen and towels. We also really appreciated the welcome gifts. The house is a short walk to beautiful Camber Sands and we really enjoyed exploring the local area. We hope to come back again soon!"

  • Have sundowners at The Owl, a friendly local 5 mins from the house. Or book an adults-only dinner at The Gallivant.
  • Spend an afternoon antique hunting in Rye, especially at Puckhaber Decorative Antiques and Salt & Salvation, where you’ll suddenly convince yourself you have space for a giant mid-century cabinet. (10 mins’ drive or 30-min cycle.)
  • Stop by Merchant & Mills for beautifully cut clothing, fabrics and sewing inspiration. Spend an hour in House next door eyeing up linen napkins and enamel lampshades, then have a cocktail at the lovely George in Rye.
  • Catch a film at Kino Rye, a tiny independent cinema tucked inside a former Victorian library – perfect on stormy sea days.
  • Day trip to Dungeness, the UK’s only desert, strewn with fishermen’s huts, strange garden sculptures and odd collections of driftwood and rusting objects. It feels slightly post-apocalyptic in the best possible way. (20 mins’ drive.)
  • Whilst there, grab lunch at Dungeness Snack Shack: the scallop flatbreads at are both incredibly simple and impossible to stop thinking about afterwards.
