Tucked away on a secret vineyard, this mirrored house feels like the future dropped gently into the Sussex countryside. Scandi sleek on the outside, it’s quietly decadent within its glass walls – forest-green velvet chairs, luxe fabrics, quirky pineapple lamps, gold cups & saucers, and a rain shower that stares boldly out into the trees.

Days here revolve around simple pleasures done extremely well: plunge into the lake for a swim then warm up in your wood-fired hot tub. Drink morning coffee and sunset wine with your feet dangling off the jetty, keeping binoculars handy to admire kingfishers, herons and moorhen. There’s no WiFi (bliss), and while the cabin itself is pristine and modern, the wider setting is charmingly farm-y, with horses and alpacas wandering around. When you fancy a change of scene, you’ve a French restaurant a short walk away, Henners Vineyard for tastings, and Herstmonceux Castle for a grand little mooch around turrets and gardens. For sea air and sand between your toes, Pevensey Bay is just 15 minutes’ drive; Birling Gap and the South Downs an easy day trip. In short, this is wildly restorative, and slightly sci-fi; quite the mix.

Getting here: drive, or train to Battle/Polegate then taxi (both 15 mins)

Owners of OOD House

“Our family have owned this land since the 1940s. Our grandparents used to run a plant nursery here, then our father ran a garden centre and wholesale conifer nursery. My sister and I now run a vineyard (The Secret Vineyard) and a wellness business (Wellness in the Wild) here. The OOD house is located next to the lake that our father dug out to irrigate the plants, and it is was the first OOD House to be built in the UK.” Owners Helen & Vicky

“The fact that it’s all glass makes it really special; you feel like you’re floating above the lake.”

They love
An every-changing panoramic view, from the comfort of bed!

You may not love
Adults only. No WiFi and intermittent 5G. Although the cabin is immaculate, the wider setting is rural, with ponies, sheep and alpacas. Occasional traffic noise. Sorry, no pets.

  • "We loved our stay at this beautiful secret spot! The hot tub was toasty for us arriving, plenty of logs! A dip / paddle board was necessary and inviting even in the cloudy wet weather! Immaculate finishing, gorgeous views of the sunrise. Definitely worth the trip and stop by the Henners wine farm!"

Unfortunately not yet, because the vineyard is newly planted so there is only a small range of wines. But Henners vineyard is close by and offers tastings.

Unfortunately not as turnaround costs are so high it’s just not financially viable for the owners.
