There’s a lovely ease to Ramsgate. Come for a couple of nights and you can do very little, very well: long breakfasts, sea air, and proper catch-ups with friends. Stay longer and the town begins to open up – you’ll find a rhythm of morning swims, bakery runs, pottering around independent shops, and unhurried meals at Seabird or Penelope’s.

Set on a quiet square in the creative quarter, this 3-storey Georgian home is the loveliest base for it all. Facing the sea, its tall windows pull in soft coastal light from morning through to dusk. Chalky Atelier Ellis tones wash the walls in a muted calm, while a thoughtful mix of English and French vintage pieces and independent design finds add texture, patina and personality. Three bedrooms (2 doubles and a twin) are all beautiful and there’s plenty of shared space for sociable dinners, then stretching out with a book, game or film. Further afield, walk to Broadstairs along the coastal path (classic seaside charm and golden beaches), or Margate for a livelier energy, with the Turner gallery, historic old town and seafood at Dory’s.

Getting here: drive, or train to Ramsgate then taxi (5 mins)

“We dreamed of buying a coastal house during the pandemic and each time we briefly came out of lockdown we would take road trips down to the Kent coast. This was the first and only house we saw – we were immediately smitten!” Owner, Charlie

  • "We had the most beautiful stay for a festive girls weekend. Such a stunning house with beautiful interiors, a peaceful setting and even views of the sea to wake up to. So many nice little touches to make he stay special - including a real, beautifully decorated Christmas tree. We will definitely be back. Thank you :)"

  • Wander around the buzzy marina then down to Main Sands for a golden beach and easy swimming.
  • Seabird is close by for small plates and cocktails; we love Penelope’s for candlelit wine, and Staple Stores is worth it for breakfast alone.
  • The Granville Theatre has been beautifully restored, and its rooftop bar (Noa) is gorgeous for a drink with a view.
  • Our Curated Abode sits just behind the house if you’re into interiors.
  • There are some great little artist studios in the arches along the marina, plus antique and retro shops around the harbour.
  • Stroll along the pier at dusk to watch the sun set over the harbour and lighthouse, and the fishing trawlers return from a day at sea.
  • Lunch on fresh mussels at the Sir Stanley Grey Tavern in pretty Pegwell Village, 20 mins’ walk along the white clifftops from town. Below is a warren of smugglers’ caves!
  • Keep walking and you’ll reach Dumpton Gap — a pretty little cove — then charming Broadstairs.
  • Spend an afternoon in modish Margate where you can visit the Turner Contemporary, tuck into small plates and organic wine at Dory’s or Angela’s, go for a dip in Walpole Bay tidal pool, or have a restorative spa treatment at Haeckel’s.
  • Or day trip to Deal for lunch at boutique hotel The Rose. Follow it with a stroll along the pier and a mooch around the many independents.
