Ashburton is the gateway to the wilds of South Dartmoor, with its vast, cinematic sweep of heather and granite tors, where rivers loop lazily through valleys and ponies wander as if they own the place (they kind of do). Just a mile from the national park, it’s a lovely town of arty independents and antique shops, woven with foodie restaurants and very good coffee. And then there’s this light-filled house, a perfect weekend base for it all. Hannah and Tom’s aesthetic is a quiet blend of Japanese minimalism and Scandinavian calm: Rolling Fog Light walls, sisal mats, curved pottery, and a rocking chair gifted by an aunt when Hannah was pregnant. Clean lines and gentle tones let the Georgian proportions and original flooring shine, while contemporary pops — dusky pink pendants, striped bathroom tiles — add elegant contrast.

The heart of the house is the open-plan kitchen and dayroom, crafted by friend and maker Jack Benjamin, where floor-to-ceiling glass floods the space with greenery from the little walled garden. Upstairs, big beds, brushed-gold showers and cut hydrangeas in tiny glass bottles lend an indulgent, hotel-like feel, perfect for relaxing after each day’s adventure. Whether you’re after long hikes on the moor, exhilarating dips in wild pools, letterboxing with kids (who’ll suddenly think walking is fun), or day trips to Hope Cove, Bantham Beach and Salcombe, this is a glorious part of the world.

Getting here: drive, or train to Newton Abbott or Totnes then taxi (15 mins)

  • Ashburton is wall-to-wall with independents and long-loved antique dealers, now joined by a wave of makers and design studios. It’s interiors heaven, perfect for rummagers, collectors and anyone with a soft spot for beautiful things.
  • It’s also a serious foodie town. Hannah and Tom love The Fish Deli and Ashburton Delicatessen for groceries, and boho Rafikis (veggie), The Old Library (modern British), Osteria Emilia’s (upmarket Italian) and Creamosfor ice cream. There’s an annual festival here that lures top chefs from across the UK.
  • You’re a mile from Dartmoor’s wild beauty: granite tors, thick forest, rugged moorland and beautiful folds of valley. Spend days hiking, cycling or simply wandering with Dartmoor ponies for company; swim in the River Dart, explore the dramatic Dart Gorge and admire Wistman’s Wood, one of Britain’s last remaining temperate rainforests.
  • The brilliant Ashburton Arts Centre (set in a Grade II-listed Methodist church) hosts jazz, comedy, films and exhibitions, while nearby Buckfast Abbey and charming villages like Lustleigh add their own history and character.
  • Families will love River Dart Country Park for high ropes, bike trails and play areas galore. Also, Stover Country Park for wildlife-rich woodland walks and Pennywell Farm for little-animal magic. Steam-train lovers can jump aboard the idyllic South Devon Railway.
  • When the sea calls, drive out to Blackpool Sands, Hope Cove, Bantham or Salcombe for golden beaches and coastal cafés. A little further, Woolacombe is ideal for bodyboarding and surfing, with long peeling waves.
