This is a house that guests return to year after year. It isn’t overly polished or showy. It’s simply timeless, beautiful and deeply restorative from the moment you arrive. Children disappear into the semi-wild garden armed with the bug pots and flower presses. Teenagers swap their phones for hammocks. Adults wander to the river to paddle then settle beneath the trees with a book and a cold beer.

Inside, ancient beans, flagstone floors, whitewashed walls and a vast inglenook fireplace create instant warmth. The generous layout works well for 2 families, 3 generations or a handful of friends looking for somewhere peaceful, and the wild Rhinog mountains are one of those rare corners of Britain that still feels undiscovered. Walk straight from the front door to waterfalls and mountain trails, or spend your days swimming, rock pooling and picnicking on the long beaches of this glorious stretch of North Wales. Browse Harlech’s brilliant independent shops, hop aboard the historic steam railway through Eryri, then return for marshmallows around the fire bowl as dusk falls. This is Dark Sky country, where the stars are dazzling and the pace of life is gloriously unhurried.

“We live and work in Brighton but we’ve been coming to this special part of Wales for over 50 years. One day we discovered the Nantcol Valley. It is the most magical place and when we saw that this house was for sale, we didn’t hesitate. We spent a long hot summer taking out ancient bathrooms, mending the roof, repairing and replacing windows, installing a kitchen and tackling the very overgrown garden.

 Owner, Emma

My Kip favourites

She loves
“The garden: full of flowers in spring, and trees casting dappled shade in summer. I love to swing on a hammock in the warm breeze, listening to birdsong and the river rushing by.”

We love
The wisteria clinging to the front of the house, and the wider setting. This little-known area is an incredible place to walk, swim in mountain lakes, climb the jagged peaks of the Rhinogs and wander along deserted beaches.

You may not love
The 4 bedrooms share 2 bathrooms. The main bedroom is accessed through either the bathroom or the twin room. Water comes from a spring on the mountain so showers need to be spaced out. Sorry, no pets.

  • "The cottage is quite simply amazing , huge but cozy at the same time. Loved the wood burner in the evenings, lovely garden and lots of sleeping space . Immaculate inside and well taken care of. Emma is a great host, very responsive and she provided lots of helpful information about local amenities . I would recommend this beautiful cottage to anyone looking for a quiet , peaceful place to stay in north Wales."

  • "A return visit to Gelliwaen for us having been last year. The cottage is comfortable, spotlessly clean and has everything you need. Emma has thought of everything to make you feel welcomed, from a lovely basket of goodies on arrival, hot water bottles and a full shelf of local maps and books on all things Welsh. The garden is wild and beautiful and there are great walks from the door. We had a lovely family holiday in this remote and cosy cottage."

Surrounds.

  • Walk into the Rhinogs, one of the quietest corners of Eryri (Snowdonia) National Park, where rugged peaks, ancient Roman steps and wild goats await. You can spend hours hiking here without seeing another soul.
  • Paddle in the river by the house, cool off beneath Nantcol Waterfalls and swim in Llyn Hywel – a lovely lake in the Rhinogs.
  • Beautiful beaches are a short drive away. Spend the day swimming and rock pooling on golden Benar Beach, or discover the peaceful dunes and ancient church at Llandanwg.
  • Explore Harlech: 20 minutes away, this handsome little town is home to the mighty Harlech Castle, excellent deli Y Groser and a clutch of brilliant independent shops selling Welsh textiles, homewares and local produce.
  • The historic Ffestiniog Railway is one of Britain’s great train journeys, climbing through spectacular mountain scenery up to Blaenau Ffestiniog.
  • We love the colourful Italianate village of Portmeirion, with its subtropical gardens, waterside walks and eccentric architecture. It’s a great place to buy pottery, too.
  • Get your adrenaline flowing: mountain bike at Coed y Brenin Forest or hurtle down the world’s fastest zip line at Llechwedd.
