For years, the owners walked past a crumbling cottage in Llanrhystud saying, “Someone could do something amazing with that.” Eventually, they became the someone. What followed was a painstaking restoration alongside a striking modern extension and boutique interiors: moody palettes, oversized headboards, heavy stone sinks and soft light bouncing off limewashed walls. It’s old Wales meeting contemporary design, without losing any of the building’s soul.

The cottage sits in a quiet coastal village on the Ceredigion coast (9 miles from Aberystwyth) with the Wales Coast Path running beside it and the beach just 10 minutes away on foot. Days here are for dolphin spotting in Cardigan Bay, paddleboarding, steam train rides through the valley, mountain biking at Nant Yr Arian and lazy pub lunches. Children can explore beaches and rockpools; grown ups will love coastal walks, wild saunas and dinner at Michelin-starred Ynys Hir. Back at the cottage, there’s a sunken seated area in the garden, enormous comfy beds upstairs and a sitting room that catches the light beautifully through the original timber ceilings. Our prediction? You’ll start wondering if you should move to Wales by day 3.

Getting here: drive, or train to Aberystwyth then taxi (20 mins)

Y Nyth owners

The owners, Iestyn and Anna, live in the village themselves and had walked past the cottage for years, always saying how incredible it could be if someone restored it properly. When it finally came up for sale in 2021, they took on what was essentially a ruin – unoccupied for years and badly in need of rescuing – before painstakingly restoring it using traditional lime-rendering techniques, and adding a striking modern extension. It was their 3rd house renovation project, but has been by far the most personal – largely because they were so determined to preserve the cottage’s connection to the history, landscape and character of the Welsh coast around it.

My Kip favourites

They love
“The interiors, born from hours of Pinterest scrolling, with a vision of something timeless and simple. We were drawn to quality materials, strong contrasts, dark kitchen tones, microcement bathrooms and uncluttered spaces that still felt warm and liveable. We then worked closely with Hannah Jones of Design House Wales – who also happens to be a friend – to help bring the whole look together.”

We love
The burnt-orange sofa in the living room, which gives a splash of colour amidst the other calm tones.

Do take care when parking in the drive, as it’s a bit narrow so be wary of the fence.

  • Walk straight onto the Wales Coast Path from the village and follow the cliffs south towards hidden coves, old lime kilns and huge Cardigan Bay views.
