“We’ve lived in the neighbouring Victorian property for nearly 20 years and raised our 3 now-almost grown-up children here. The large woodland garden was predominantly a football pitch and adventure playground while they were growing up, so when all their football nets etc disappeared, we were left with a literal gap to fill! As the 1st lockdown drew to a close, we took a family trip over the border to Devon to stay in a delightful cabin and converted static caravan combo. It was here that we had a lightbulb moment and realised that we could do something similar ourselves. We’ve always loved architecture and design and felt it was the right time to take on a build project. We collaborated with a friend architect and have absolutely loved the process.” Owners Alysia and Matt
They love
“In the warmer months, slow mornings: grazing over breakfast on the deck, planning the day ahead whilst absorbing the rays of sunshine. In cooler climes, a winter beach walk then coming back to snuggle under blankets in front of the woodburner with good book or movie plus a glass of wine and some chocolate!”
We love
The beautiful, pared-back style and proximity to stunning Carbis Bay. Coastal footpaths also mean you can easily dip in and out of St Ives (1.5 miles).
You may not love
It’s not secluded; you’re in a quiet corner of the owners’ garden but you’re not overlooked and it’s fenced off for privacy. No TV (download before you come). A steep walk back from the beach!
Sustainability.
“We used a humdrum static caravan to provide the inner frame, and sustainably sourced materials inside and out to create a more pleasing aesthetic. Furnishings and produces are ethically or locally sourced. Our Eco-designed Ekol Apple pie woodburner is perfect for heating smaller spaces efficiently and we supply Lekto compressed wood fuel harvested from sustainable plantations and with no harmful chemicals. The waste ash is then thrown onto our compost.”
Surrounds.
- We love an early morning walk/run from Carbis Bay to Porthkidney beach, to witness a spectacular sunrise over St Ives Bay.
- Or go slow. Upon waking, take your perculator to the pergola, and sip coffee on the Norwegian-inspired deckchairs, made locally using Cornish oak.
- Wander down to Carbis Bay for easy beach days and dips in the crystal-clear water.
- Try paddleboarding and kayaking with local company Ocean Sports Hire, or head over to St Ives (4 mins by train) and take a surfing lesson on Porthmeor beach.
- You can also walk along the SW Coastal Path to St Ives, where the Barbara Hepworth museum and Tate gallery draw crowds for good reason.
- For sublime cocktails and a sustainable menu, head for Adam Handling’s The Ugly Butterfly right on Carbis Bay. Or try La Casita or The Cornish Arms pub.
- After dark, light the St Eval candles (made in Wadebridge) and flick through the cabin’s photography guidebooks such as Weekend Journals, Maverick Guides and Haarkon for inspiration: they highlight Cornwall’s best bits, by those in the know.
