Woodburner

Tucked right into the Howgill Fells (part of Yorkshire Dales National Park), this was once a Victorian schoolhouse and has been brought back to life with real flair and graft. Jonny, a master timber framer, built almost everything by hand — from the kitchen cupboards to the copper loo-roll holders — while Mary’s background in historic buildings shines through in the details: painted panelling, salvaged Lakeland slate, and original 1870s school desks now serving as window seats, initials of long-gone pupils still scratched into the wood. They originally planned it as their forever home and moved in on a freezing December day to find it cold, damp, and mouldy, with ice on the inside of the windows!

Years later, Ridge House is full of character and charm: a big farmhouse kitchen opening onto a sun-soaked patio and wide-open views, a book-lined sitting room, and wild walks spilling from the front door. With 3 double bedrooms it’s great for friends, but families will love the sense of space and freedom: huge fells to run about on, secret river swims nearby and cosy sitting rooms for after dark. When you’re ready for company, Sedbergh — the country’s only book town — is just down the road, offering cosy pubs, an artisan market, and shelves upon shelves to get lost in. Be sure to venture further, too: Cautley Spout and Uldale Force waterfall are close by, and you can easily zip to Kendal and Windemere for Lake District days.

Getting here: best to drive, but you can train to Oxenholme direct from London then taxi (30 mins)

Owners-Jonny-and-Mary

“We bought Ridge House in 2017, moving into a freezing, mouldy shell that became the backdrop to our wedding, then the arrival of our 2 children! Over the years Jonny rebuilt and crafted almost everything by hand while we lived through woodburners, sheds, and snowed-in weeks. Now (finally) finished, it is filled with love, history, and craftsmanship, and we’re delighted to share its magic, views, and starlit skies with guests. We were sad to outgrow it ourselves but we now live next door, so you may catch a glimpse of us gathering veg from our polytunnel but you’re totally private!” Owners, Jonny and Mary

They love
“Swimming in the river over the summer months. It’s wide and shallow and the dappled light through the trees and smell of wild garlic on a hot day is bliss. You’re pretty much guaranteed to be the only person here so don’t worry if you’ve forgotten your swimmers. You won’t shock the sheep!”

We love
The story of the renovation, a true labour of love done slowly and sustainably, adding sheepswool into walls, lime mortar into stone and using logs from Jonny’s workshop to fuel the woodburner before they added central hearing. It’s now rooted in its past, but built beautifully and stylishly, for the way we live today.

You may not love
A 3-, 4 or 7-night stay, checking in on Mon or Fri only. Beds cannot be twinned. You’ll need a car to get here and around. Occasional carpentry noise from next door.

  • “The most wonderful property! Mary and Jonny’s place is something to behold. Carved into the natural surroundings, it’s everything you could want for a perfect holiday in the great outdoors. Windows that overlook the beautiful Yorkshire Dales and within drivable distance to The Lake District walks, this place will be one that we will be coming back to in the near future. Our three children all asked, ‘Can we live here?’ throughout our trip - this says it all. We loved the nearby town, the impressive Cautley Spout walk and the beautiful trail runs up to The Calf and nearby peaks. Coming back to a log fire in a beautiful home made this holiday one that we will remember for a long time.”

  • "This was, without question, the best holiday cottage we’ve experienced across numerous stays throughout Europe. The environment allowed us to fully unwind, and it stands out as one of the few genuinely dog-friendly properties we've encountered. We thoroughly enjoyed our time there and are already looking forward to returning"

  • "This was a lovely cottage. Perfect in so many ways. Gorgeous location, beautiful decor, lots of personal touches & very welcoming. We loved the whole place! It was an ideal destination for our grandparent’s & granddaughters get together. We all felt very much at home. A massive thank you."

  • "The cottage absolutely blew us away. It was prepared to the highest standard and was absolutely spotless. Very quaint and peaceful with the most stunning views. We had a delightful holiday and would love to come back again."

  • "Ridge House is a gem on all counts: cozy and very comfortable with loads of character and personality thanks to the personal carpentry work of the owners and home furnishings redolent of their globe trotting outdoor adventures, not to mention large collection of books, all of it set amidst staggering natural beauty, visible from every window of the house. Second, Ridge House is 5 minutes drive from one of the most charming and touristically unspoiled towns in the Yorkshire Dales, Sedbergh — complete with excellent green grocer, butcher, and convenience store. Last, the house is a few minutes drive from some of the best walking trails in the Dales — Cautley Spout and Winder, for example. The weather didn’t smile on us, but the house and its picturesque tranquility more than made up for it. I don’t know if we will ever return but we will certainly remember our stay at Ridge House always."

  • "Ridge House is an absolute gem. Nestled in a stunning setting, it offers breathtaking views from every window—morning to night. The house itself is cosy yet wonderfully spacious, beautifully finished throughout, and filled with thoughtful touches, including a lovely piano that adds to its charm. It feels instantly homely and has everything you could possibly need right at hand. Despite its peaceful surroundings, it’s only a short drive to local amenities, making it the perfect blend of seclusion and convenience. Mary was incredibly friendly, warm, and attentive both during our stay and in her messages before and after. We would love to return one day."

  • "Our stay at Ridge House was outstanding. The house is beautiful and was spotless. It has everything you could possibly need for your trip. The location was perfect and so peaceful. Communication with Mary was seamless and she went above and beyond to make us feel welcome. We couldn't have asked for a better experience and would highly recommend to anyone looking for a cosy and relaxing stay. Thank you so much!"

Sustainability.

The house was renovated using healthy, breathable materials—sheepswool in the walls, woodfibre in the roof, lime-mortar pointing, and re-used Lakeland slates—finishing inside with painted tongue-and-groove timber to echo its schoolhouse past. Heated by an air-source pump with underfloor warmth, fitted with timber double-glazing, and stocked with eco-friendly products (plus logs from Jonny’s workshop off-cuts), the house was designed to be kind to the planet.

  • Families will love exploring the garden: a 2-acre paradise of lawns and bluebell woodlands. There’s also a shallow ford across the road to paddle in, and you can walk across the fields to swim in a river.
  • Or swim like a local. Head to Millthrop Bridge for an easy-access dip in the River Rawthey, or scramble your way to the famous Uldale Force where a hidden waterfall plunge pool feels like another world.
  • Climb Cautley Spout. England’s highest cascade is right on your doorstep; walk out from the house or start at the Cross Keys Inn and hike alongside the tumbling falls to the top for knockout valley views.
  • Summit Wild Boar Fell – a proper fell walk rewarded with Sand Tarn at the top, complete with a sandy beach at 650m (yes, really). Families may prefer to conquer Winder Hill — a doable hike with sweeping views.
  • Sedbergh is just 3 miles away, a friendly little town crammed with second-hand bookshops, artisan markets, great local produce and cosy pubs. The Black Bull is dog friendly, run by multi-award winning chef Nina Matsunaga. The food at The Dalesman is also excellent (note, no dogs).
  • Zip to the Lake District: just a short drive away, you can explore iconic fells, lakeside villages and hidden coves then retreat back here for peace.

FAQs.

Yes, up to 2 dogs are welcome for an additional cost (£35/dog /stay) but are not allowed upstairs. The property is fenced and the drive gated, but it is set in 1.7 acres of sloping fellside so you’d need to keep an eye on them. The surrounding fields are full of sheep so you need to be mindful of this, especially in spring when they are pregnant.

It’s fibre optic so pretty good. You do have to switch between 2 different WiFis in different parts of the house though due to thick stone wall!

Very, you’re not overlooked from anywhere. The owners live next door but you probably won’t see them.

Because the washing and cleaning required for a shorter stay isn’t viable for the owners, either financially or environmentally.

An additional £35/stay. It can be set up in the master bedroom or second sitting room.
