Nothing’s quite as synonymous with big skies and wilderness as a vintage Airstream trailer, so this classic 1969 beauty feels right at home on a hilltop, with wraparound views of a moody sea loch and the rugged Trottenish mountains. Inside, it’s a small but beautifully thought-out cocoon: warm ply curves around the original aluminium shell, with a vintage leather sofa, a little dining spot at the window and a compact kitchen, plus a turntable, vinyl, books and binoculars for watching wildlife. Mathew and Celina bought the Airstream along with the main house and have since added their own mix of vintage finds, textiles and considered details without losing any of its retro character. Even in the wildest of weather it’s cosy inside, and you may glimpse the aurora borealis from your window, occasionally painting the sky with neon strobes during the dark winter months.

Skye is as captivating as the hype: an extraordinary playground of craggy peaks, mythical fairy pools and seascapes to inspire a thousand watercolours. It’s incredibly peaceful on this northwest tip of the island yet teeming with life – from wandering red deer to white-tailed eagles and sea otters in the loch far below. A pod of orca and minke whales return here each year; keep those binoculars handy in case their visit coincides with yours.

The-Passing-Place-Airstream owners

“The Airstream came with the house when we bought it, and was tucked away in the garden with this incredible view. We immediately fell for its character and setting and knew we wanted to keep it as a place for guests to stay. It’s a tiny place, but there’s something very special about switching off here and just watching the landscape outside for hours.” Owners Celina & Mat

““Curling up in the evening, when the little lamp throws this gorgeous warm glow across the curved metal walls and ceiling.“

We love
The little window-side dining spot: surely one of Skye’s best tables for 2.

Unfortunately no, the space is too small for pets.

No, sorry, this is an adults-only space.

Yes, you’ll need a car to get here, and to get around Skye. It’s a 15-minute drive to Carbost where you’ll find a great pub, restaurant and shops.

There’s no router in the Airstream but the 5G is excellent so you can hotspot.

The Airstream is on the same property as the owners’  holiday house and a guest annexe, but it’s a little walk away from both, surrounded by nature. The house is only visited occasionally, and the annexe is only rentable in high season. So while you’re not completely isolated, the Airstream feels peaceful and private.

No, the min stay is 3 nights, but you can check in on any day, subject to availability on the calendar.

With built-in heating, as well as an additional freestanding heater to keep it extra cosy during the colder months.
