North Lodge Glen Dye on Kip Hideaways

The case for a Scottish cabin this cosy season.

The light drops low and gold across the glens, the first snow settles on the Cairngorm tops, and a downpour you can see coming from miles off crosses the loch and rattles the windows while you stay exactly where you are, warm, by the fire, watching it pass.

Summer gets the long days and the crowds; the cold months get the drama. A wood burner lit since mid-afternoon, mist sitting in the corrie behind the house, rain on the roof and nowhere you need to be – this is when a cabin in the Highlands does its best work. When the weather rolling in off the Atlantic is the entertainment, and you can watch the whole thing from bed.

And the cold makes the good stuff better: a sauna right on the loch, a bracing dip off the jetty and back to the heat. One cabin you reach only by boat, because there’s no other way in. A lochside table laid for dinner somewhere you’d never find on your own.

These are the Scotland cabins at the top of our wishlist this cosy season.
