Whispering woods, singing birds, the soft rustle of squirrels… There’s a smidge of magic running through this vast Herefordshire estate, and at the very top of it, concealed amid 100 acres of ancient oaks and firs, lies The Quist. If it weren’t so luxurious it could be straight from the pages of a children’s book. But deliciously luxe it is, with 2 spacious bedrooms, beautifully draped fabrics and not one, but 3 bathing options, 2 of them alfresco to max out the forest views. Exceptionally crafted by its owners (a carpenter and creative) it’s achingly cool, too, and full of quirky contrasts. Cute gingham check paired with an industrial-style plate rack, for instance; wood panelling with exposed pipework and a glossy Smeg fridge.

It’s off-grid, but entertainment is all around: if you’ve kids in tow, run wild in the woodland. Come with another couple and visit Hereford’s independents and Hay-on-Wye, where bookshops rub shoulders with cool cafes and adventure specialists, who’ll lure you out in canoes on the River Wye or hiking in the Black Mountains. Or come a deux, such a romantic space. But however you spend your days, end them with a soak in the wood-fired hot tub. Magic, indeed.

The Quist owners

Matt and Harriet moved back to Hereford from Bristol to bring up their daughter Minnie in the countryside. Matt is a carpenter and builder and Harriet is a creative with a passion for interior design, so it made total sense to combine their skills and create this serene treetops space.

My Kip favourites

They love
“Literal forest bathing: start each day with an outdoor shower, looking out into the oak canopy.”

We love
The sense of space: this is literally the only building in 100 acres of woodland, and you have a front-row seat to the most incredible view.

You may not love
Minimum 2 or 3 nights (see Specifics). No WiFi.

  • "Just so so dreamy, I wish I could live here. The interiors were so tasteful and luxurious. "

    Zoe, June
  • "We had such a blissful weekend in this very special place Harriet & Matt have created. We had so many grand plans to explore the local area, go out for walks etc, but we just couldn't tear ourselves away. The level of attention to detail of the design of the treehouse is something of a marvel, and we now want to redecorate our whole house!"

    Jason & Ella
  • "To have spent the first 2 days of our honeymoon here has been an absolute privilege. The attention to detail is second to none, and the access to space and land for off-lead dog walking is incredibly rare. We wish we were staying longer."

    Mark
  • "A perfect place to retreat, chill and recharge the batteries."

    Steve & Tracy
  • "We stayed for 2 nights and loved every minute. My 3-year-old daughter thought it was the most magical place ever, and to be honest so did I. The views are amazing, the house itself is so well designed and interior lovers will have a field day. My personal highlight was the bath - total heaven."

Surrounds.

  • Black Mountains
    Black Mountains
  • Sunbathe on the deck, explore the estate’s woodlands and meadows, and walk to the local pub for lunch (2 miles)
  • Pack swimmers for a wild dip at Bredwardine river beach (15 mins’ drive). It’s a blissful spot for paddling, swimming and lounging with a picnic, admiring the grand old brick bridge.
  • We love mooching along Hereford’s ancient shopping street, which winds up to the awesome cathedral. The little town is full of great restaurants, too: try Sensory & Rye for brunch (seasonal local fare), En BBQ for Korean grills and superior sushi, andThe Bookshop for an award-winning Sunday roast.
  • Idle along the River Wye in a canoe: the Glasbury to Symonds Yat stretch is the most picturesque, with the added incentive of a fantastic pub at the end.
  • Literary lovers’ Hay-on-Wye is a 30-minute drive, with indie bookshops at every turn. There are also excellent cafes and markets, as well as a beautiful river beach ‘The Warren’, just a short walk from the centre.
  • And if you want to read more about the story of the estate, former gamekeeper Evan Rodgers recounts his time caring for this beautiful piece of protected land in his book A Funny Old Quist: Memoirs of a Gamekeeper – the perfect read for your stay.
  • Explore the Black Mountains on foot: Cat’s Back Ridge and Hay Bluff are both circular walks with immense views of the Brecon Beacons.
