Step inside a slice of Norwich history. This Grade II* listed townhouse was once part of the pioneering Bethel Hospital, built in 1713 by philanthropist Mary Chapman. When her husband died, she used his legacy to create Britain’s first privately funded hospital — a compassionate act that shaped the city for centuries. And today, her generous spirit lives on in this lovely home; central yet hidden away overlooking a peaceful courtyard garden.

Sympathetically restored, Georgian features — sash windows, oak trusses — have been beautifully balanced with creative interiors. Colour-drenched walls and antique finds add warmth and personality, while luxe extras (hotel-quality bedding, Sonos sound, Verden toiletries, a Sage coffee machine) add a boutique edge. There’s plenty of space to gather your group: a full-sized kitchen, roomy living area, and a rare city-centre balcony with a dining table. Breakfast alfresco; accompany long dinners with late-night vinyl and Negronis. Outside the gate, Norwich waits to be explored or hop in the car and be at the Norfolk coast in under an hour. The best of a city stay, yet wonderfully cocooning, too.

Getting here: drive, or train to Norwich then taxi (15 mins)

“We purchased the property in June 2024, having fallen in love with its story and location. Mary’s will dictated that the Bethel hospital should become an independent public trust and her dream lived on for more than 275 years before closing in 1995, and being turned into residential homes instead. When we purchased ours, it was in need of a full renovation to honour its Georgian heritage. I was inspired by Mary’s bold nature when curating the space, creating a warm, cosy and calm feel by colour drenching.” Owner, Emily

My Kip favourites

She loves
“The location. I’m originally from Scotland and moved to Norwich in 2019, yet I’m still surprised by how much there is to do and see here. I love the quaint streets, buzzing pubs and independent shops and cafes. Not to mention, we’re only 1 hour from the Norfolk coast. After 6 years, I still feel like a tourist in my own city and want to share this with others!”

We love
The covered balcony, where you can eat outside year-round.

You may not love
No private parking; there’s an RCP 100 yards away (payable via Ring Go). Shared residential courtyard. Sorry, no pets.

  • "Absolutely stunning space - a lovingly restored two story townhome in a beautiful historic building. The location is right in the middle of everything fun in Norwich, but with how cosy the home is you might not even want to go out! Obviously a space intentionally curated by owners with a keen eye for interior design. They put a lot of effort to elevate the experience with luxury finishes, nice smells, a cozy living space with plenty of seating and easy to use technology."

  • "Highly recommend Chapman House for a beautiful home away from home. It’s even lovelier than in the photos! It’s right in the heart of Norwich, yet tucked away in a peaceful and private courtyard garden. It is thoughtfully equipped with just about everything you could need - like spices, oil and vinegar, proper bread, milk and eggs upon arrival. We felt really welcome. We had a great stay here as a wider family and everyone loved the decor, the comfy beds and the little touches that just made it extra special. My little niece wanted to move in permanently and loved the balcony! We will definitely stay here again."
