“We purchased the property in June 2024, having fallen in love with its story and location. Mary’s will dictated that the Bethel hospital should become an independent public trust and her dream lived on for more than 275 years before closing in 1995, and being turned into residential homes instead. When we purchased ours, it was in need of a full renovation to honour its Georgian heritage. I was inspired by Mary’s bold nature when curating the space, creating a warm, cosy and calm feel by colour drenching.” Owner, Emily
She loves
“The location. I’m originally from Scotland and moved to Norwich in 2019, yet I’m still surprised by how much there is to do and see here. I love the quaint streets, buzzing pubs and independent shops and cafes. Not to mention, we’re only 1 hour from the Norfolk coast. After 6 years, I still feel like a tourist in my own city and want to share this with others!”
We love
The covered balcony, where you can eat outside year-round.

- Elm Hill is a photographer’s dream: a medieval cobbled street of merchants’ houses, thatching, speciality shops and small cafes.
- Hire an e-bike or e-scooter to explore the city and river path on 2 wheels.
- Foodies should book these top restaurants in advance (all walkable): 33 in the Park (the best brunch spot); Haggle (lively Middle Eastern restaurant with excellent meze; Tallow (buzzy steak restaurant); Benedict’s (modern British fine dining with an unfussy ethos).
- The nearby Theatre Royal hosts brilliant family events throughout the year, as does the Norwich Puppet Theatre. Check and see what coincides with your dates.
- Paddleboard along the river with Norfolk Paddleboards; or book the riverside sauna and do a few cold plunge and steams, following by hot drinks around the fire at the Lion’s Den.
- Kayak between riverside pubs with Pub & Paddle; fabulous on a sunny day. Or for something more sedate, picnic in the grounds of Norwich Cathedral.
