Check in/out on Thursdays or Sundays only for 3, 4 or 7 nights. The bunk room is accessed via one of the other bedrooms. Only 1 bathroom. Remote; you’ll need to drive to shops, pubs and restaurants (5-15 mins). Faces onto the road but the garden is fenced.

- Pack a picnic and wander to the 12thC ruins of Pendragon Castle, just a 10-minute stroll away.
- Scale Wild Boar Fell or wander along the beautiful Mallerstang Edge for big skies and often-deserted trails.
- Wild swim at Catagill Scar (there’s an almost-secret pool in a river glade) or Hell Gill (a very deep canyon, with a 1m waterfall and deep plunge pool). Then whiz home to warm up in the sauna!
- There are incredible dark skies in the Yorkshire Dales National Park so bring binoculars, blankets and a thermos for hot chocolate (or you can hire the lot).
- Take the scenic drive up to the Tan Hill Inn — the highest pub in England — for a pint with views.
- Or cycle up there via the Buttertubs Pass; you can hire bikes nearby.
- Hop aboard the Settle to Carlisle railway — one of the UK’s most spectacular train journeys — with viaducts, tunnels and the wild scenery of the North Pennines, Eden Valley and Yorkshire Dales en route.
- Ride horses through the fells and enjoy fabulous views over Lake Ullswater.
- BYO pints (yes, really!) to the 16thC Temperance pub in Cautley Spout, owned by the National Trust. Or head to Ravenstonedale (4.8 miles) where there are 2 great locals, the Black Swan and The King’s Head.
